Instead of bashing why dont you just try NIS 2009. Its a million times after and lighter. Only uses anywhere from 6,000K to 12,000K.

wolfy- I understand what you are saying about tech support. I had gotten conflicting information, though I knwo not on purpose.

However, this frum has been a belssing. the staff and users on here are so helpful. I think if I had this help over the last year or so, I'd have been less worried about safety. These guys and gals have been great!! makes me continue to use Norton products

Hi Wolfy,

I have not recently used just NAV. For the past number of years I have used the NIS suite, so maybe we're comparing apples and oranges.

Over the years, I have found a steady reduction in process usage and a steady increase in detection capabilities especially since NIS 2005.

I am currently using NIS 2009 and I am amazed at the extremely light resource usage. It is truly a programming breakthrough.

I have NIS 2009 on three  computers, one of which runs a very memory intensive video editing platform. If any machine should be affected by a security suite, this is the one that should have issues, but it has absolutely none. As a matter of fact, on the video editing forums, most recommend a dedicated machine with no antivirus programs.  I don't have that worry with NIS 2009.

So I have nothing but Kudos to offer Symantec for their continuing innovations in security protection and reduction in resource usage.

And although I can't dispute your claims about NAV being a resource hog, I don't understand why that would be when the NIS 2009 suite is so light.

I should also add that I have not found it necessary to run additional spyware programs and I too have never been infected. About once a month I may run an "on-demand" malware detector just to double check things, but honestly, it has never detected anything that slipped through NIS.  And I can also report that I  have never experienced any crashes or issues with Windows updates.

In the NIS 2009, there are "help" icons listed right next to the different setting selections and they take you right to the subject at hand - it is a great set up; no more searching through the help section.

Last but not least, I have never run into any installation or debugging issues. All of my upgrades have been smooth installs.

I'm really impressed with NIS 2009 and I am a very satisfied customer.

Best Wishes.

I will second what Phil just said.

And add that this is one of the most supportive forums I have seen.  For all the individual problems and occasional slight sniping, there is a whole lot of professionalism from people who don't have to but are willing to give a great amount of their time.

I just installed NIS 2009 on 3 PCs (2 XP + 1 Vista) and I am really impressed.

I ha problms with NIS 2007 on Vista, too slow, but NIS 2009 is a great improvement.

And I like the new UAC add-on!

Moreover, this forum seems very friendly and helpful, so... why ask more?

I have run Symantec NIS for about 8 years now. I ran NIS 2008 and earlier versions with either Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor (I did not run both spyware programs at the same time). NIS always alerted me before the spyware programs did. I would have to agree with all that Phil_D stated, with NIS 2009 you don’t need anymore spyware protection. I am running NIS 2009 without any other spyware software now and my computer is running faster than ever. If you have not tried NIS 2009, give it a try. It’s nothing like the earlier versions of NIS.  I am very impressed with NIS 2009:smileywink:

NIS 2009 is the best I’ve seen.   I had used NAV as far back as I remember.  I bought, switched to and dropped NIS in 2007 after it seemed to really slow down my systems.  I again tried NIS2008 and thought it was a good improvement, but 09 blows it away.   Everything about 09 is so much better, resource usage, cpu load and the installation time as compared to 07 or 08 is remakable.   It looks like 09 is doing extremely well in testing by the various companies that test the software.  Kudos to the folks at Symantec for a job very well done.

Yes.......It is not just me, but NIS 2009 is less resource intensive!  I just updated and did notice my computer seemed to be noticeably "smoother".  You guys are right, they really did make a big improvement in the programs resource usage.
