NIS not loading after first live update and restart

Well, I hope this hasn't already come up in the forums, but here is my issue.  I  have NIS 2010, on a Dell laptop, running Vista.  It downloads and installs fine, and when the initial live update commences to get it all ready to go, that installs fine, too.  It's after I restart my computer with all of the updates, that NIS does not even load at start  up, and then 5-10 minutes later, a screen comes up, sending an error report message to Symantec.  I have tried multiple times to uninstall/reinstall this (the product itself states "Your computer may not be protected, please uninstall/re-install your Norton product.), going so far as to re-download the software from the website after manually deleting all norton/symantec folders/files on my system.  If someone could let me know the issue that live update/NIS is having, or can tell me how to fix this, I would really appreciate it.  Thank you for reading and your time.
