NIS Product Update Failure

I started up my computer like normal and everything was OK, then like always the first thing I do is update Norton all the updates downloaded and installed apart from one, "NIS Product Update" this update failed I tried tech support but that didn't help either. Then I restarted my computer but still it failed, does anyone know what's wrong?Norton Update Failed.jpg

What version number is showing under Help & Support>about?

Norton Internet Security 2010
Version: 17.5.0.127

Can you tell us what Tech Support did to try to resolve the problem, or what they suggested?

Sorry some of this is my fault, when i said Tech support I meant One Click Support.

Anyway One Click support said to:

1) Start your Norton 2010 product.

2) In the Computer pane, click Run LiveUpdate.

3) When Norton LiveUpdate is finished, click OK.

4) Run LiveUpdate until you see the message, "Norton LiveUpdate finished - No updates found".

I tried this but it didn't work.

I turned on my laptop (which has NIS 2010) and the update(s) was fine on that. I ran a Malwarebytes full scan on my computer and nothing was found I don't know what is preventing the update from installing.

Try turning off Tamper Protection and then run Liveupdate again to see if it goes in.

Hi, new here.

I noticed the same failure for that particular "NIS Product Update".  The problem started last night.  As of this moment the problem is still there.  I even turned off Tamper Protection and tried Liveupdate manually and it still failed.  At least I now know I'm not alone.

You both might do well to discuss the situation with Customer Service chat to see if Tech support can either explain the situation or rectify it.

FWIW, have you tried a power off instead of a reboot?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I shut down my computer and turned it on but still the one update failed to complete, i turned off tamper protection but still it failed. I'll try the Norton Advanced support (online chat), thanks for the help anyway.

I have one small easy-to-do, fast, does-no-harm thing to suggest trying.

Create a new user with administrative rights.

REBOOT your computer to the new user and see if you can get a complete update under the aegis of the new user.

If the problem you are having is somehow related to the configuration of your user account, this would solve it.  And if it solves it, it will help us make suggestions about your user account.

If it doesn't solve the problem, we will know that it is rooted at the All User level, which would be an entirely different strategy for fixing.

I spent an entire afternoon with Symantec's online chat support and the conclusion that their tech people (initial tech person and his supervisor) came to was that it's a problem related to a recent Windows update from Microsoft regarding a free microsoft upgrade to Windows 7 for Windows Vista (I don't know how I got the update.  I'm assuming it was part of a Patch Tuesday update).  The supervisor said the following:

Support Agent: The issue is noticed on Windows Vista computers after Microsoft updates .

Support Agent: Microsoft was providing free upgrade to all Windows Vista users to windows 7 .Norton is also working with Microsoft to check for the cause .

Support Agent: You would be getting auto update once the issue on windows Vista is resolved .

Support Agent: Windows 7 was launched after such compatibilty issues were noted with other softwares on the Windows Vista computer.

Support Agent: You woukld be getting the update notification from Microsoft or Norton once the issues with the 2010 version is fixed .

They came to this conclusion only after having reinstalled NIS 2010 on my computer three times.  Hope this info is helpful.

Hi,

Inquirer and mijcar

Some of my afternoon was also spent by the Symantec online chat, they remotely tried to fix the problem, firstly they ran the intelligent updater then un-installed my product and re-installed it, and then finally they done some registry editing, all of these methods failed, then I just gave up with the remote online help. I thought removing my Norton product with the removal tool and then re-installing it would help, but even that failed, this problem seems complicated, I'll try mijcar's new user account method and post back on what happens.

When you click on Tech Support, and when One Click Support window starts, do you find any error codes like 8921,229. Please let us know the error code or error message you have.

Hi Vineeth

Yes there is and error code, this is the whole sentence:

For Windows XP: Click Start > Run.

2 In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll

Hi,

1 Click the Start button, right-click Computer or My Computer, and then click Properties.

2 Do one of the following depending on your version of Windows:

  • For Windows 7 or Vista: Under Tasks, click Advanced system settings. If the User Account Control window appears, click Continue.
  • For Windows XP: Click Advanced tab.

3 In the System Properties window, click Environment Variables.

4 Under System variables, check for the variable named TEMP.

5 If the value of TEMP is C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, then change it to C:\TEMP.

6 Click Apply > OK.

7 Restart the computer

8 Run LiveUpdate.

Hi Vineeth

I did what you said but that still didn't solve the problem.
