NIS 2008 Version 15.0.0.60

Windows XP Home (SP2) - All the latest updates

Thanks,

Phil

Did you use the Norton Removal Tool  to uninstall? If not, I suggest you run that, then reinstall once more.

If you have already tried this, I would suggest you contact online support who will be able to take remote control to access your PC and troubleshoot this.

My firewall is broke. I cannot allow new programs access to the internet. Any new rule is ignored with the following message:

'The new firewall rule does not affect this connection. Default action is to "block"'

Even when NIS automatically creates a new rule, the above message is the result, and the app is not allowed access to the internet.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 3 times. After a fresh install, it works, but when I do a Live Update, it stops working. Programs that were allowed access before the Live Update still have access, but any new program will be denied even though a new rule has been created for it. I have tried setting "Allow" and creating manual entries, but nothing works.

Disabling the firewall does no good either! It continues to block programs.

Any help is appreciated.

Phil

You don't by any chance also have Zone Alarm installed and have installed Windows Updates this week?

There's a known problem with one of the WUD breaking Zone Alarm and stopping internet connections.

I haven't tried the removal tool, I'll try that today. On the last uninstall/install, did remove every left over file/directory from Symantec I could find as well as remove the registry entries under "Software", but there were still some stuff under "classes root" and maybe some other obscure places though.

As a matter of fact, I did download the latest from WUD this week, but the problem started over the weekend.

Thanks for the ideas.

Phil

Hi Huwyngr,

Way interesting info.  Not sure if anyone else is aware of a major security flaw rumoured to have been found in the design of the internet / web.  Apparently MS / Cisco and other heavyweights went into mega collaboration to come up with joint patch releases to fix it - see here and here

Following the breadcrumbs there is a link between a recent MS update (KB951748) and ZAPRO falling over.  I'm not so sure it's WUD breaking ZAPRO as opposed to the MS patch.

ZAPRO advise their users to pull the update ... which may make their product work but one wonders if it exposes people to the security threat the patch *may* be designed to fix.  Outside my pay scale ... I tend to play such things conservatively especially if the security flaw is real and as significant as has been suggested.

We live in interesting times - this is worth watching.  Not sure if Symantec have a position or whether or not NIS2008 is affected.  No mention of KB951748 on the Symanatec site.

ZA Labs has since released new versions of all of their software affected by the update according to this.  I hope the people here that are running the ZA firewall are running it with NAV and not NIS.

That's correct. ZoneAlarm had some mayor changes. I'm not sure if that helps the Norton customer.

BTW: welcome to the club Midway

It does not seem to affect other security applications.

Well, it all seems to be working now.

As johna suggested, I used the removal tool and followed the reinstall instructions on the web which had me download a new version of the installation files. Don't know if it was the removal tool or the new installation files that fixed it (or both for that matter).

Thanks to all those who helped.

Phil

Thanks for the good news …

It will probably help to get answers if you say what version of NIS you are using (Year and version number -- Help & Support / About and the second TAB) and what version of Windows.
