BAD NEWS: On reboot #17, the problem recurred. Looks like the DEP theory bites the dust. Sorry everyone.
Hi there:
Could someone exhibiting the 17.5, XP SP3 issue do me a small favor?
Please turn off Tamper Protection in NIS (select Permanently) and reboot twice.
Does the problem remain or disappear on the affected systems?
When complete, reinstate Tamper Protection.
Kindly advise. Thanks
Plankton, from what I've read here.. and with my own experience.. once the issue happens... you cannot launch NIS at all, thus are UNABLE to turn off Tamper protection.
My only recouse was to boot into safe mode, uninstall the product. Then after doing so happily reinstall NIS 2009 which for me has had no issues. My 2nd PC still has NIS 2010 but has not encountered the issue so I aleady have tamper protection off in case it crops up.
If someone's losing the tray and STILL able to launch NIS at this point then by all means try the suggestion, but I don't think you're going to find many if at all.

As Tim indicated, we have identified one potential reason why the tray icon may fail to appear upon start-up. Unfortunately, it is highly timing dependant and therefore difficult for us to reproduce in-house. By changing the DEP settings, you probably changed the timing in your machine a little bit making the problem less reproducible. Some people's machines will have the right timing to expose the problem while many others' won't. By providing the information that Tim has requested, we can confirm whether you are actually experiencing the same issue or not.
Thanks Reese. That makes sense. Glad to hear it's not just my PC trying to make me think I've gone completely nuts.
Just to say, been kinda of skimming on these forums for a little because I've been having these NIS problems. I am running lastest WindowsXP with the lastest windows update + NIS 17.5.
In one of my boots, when NIS appeared, I've done what you said with turning off the tamper protection permanently.
First reboot acutally worked. Second reboot unfortually did not (not icon or NIS being able to access).
It is a intermittant problem. Unfortually with NIS being off then rather than running.
For your information, I've been having these problems since I do my last windows updates about a week or so ago and installed the lastest FireFox 3.6. I'm not sure if any of these maybe causing the problem.
Hope that helps a little anyway.
Hi KSamurai:
Welcome to the Norton Community!
Kindly review this post -
Thanks!
Evening
Forgive me if this is known to all of you but when the icon goes and NIS won't respond if I restart and go into safe mode and then restart to normal windows the icon and NIS seem to work as they should.
It doesn't last as sometimes when I boot up the icon has gone but it is strange it works after exiting from safe mode.
I haven't reinstall yet but it seems it works fine when it works.
My pc is also set to go into standby could it be that waking up can cause the problem to occur?
Plankton
As much as I would like to help, I do not want to reboot and lose my protection. In addition, I have low computer skills and, as a result, I am reluctant to "mess around". I have been coping with this problem after three NIS failures (in spite of three sessions with support chat) by leaving my computer running 24/7 for the last few days. NIS continues to run. (My problem wasn't the icon disappearing from the tray after my computer was running. My problem was that NIS would not start when I started my computer -- Windows media centre edition SP 3.) I have turned off the tamper protection permanently. I appreciate your assistance.
All,
We believe we may have a fix available really soon. However, since we still can not reproduce this issue, we would like to see if any of you consistantly experiencing this issue would like to test out a fix.
If you would like to see if the fix works, and are computer savvy enough to boot in to safe mode, rename a file on your hard drive, and then place a new file in its place, then please send me a Private Message.
I know many of you are seeing this issue. However, I will only need 5 volunteers to verify this fix works.
Please only volunteer if you have this issue, and the failure occurs almost (if not every) reboot.
Hi all:
Here is what I have found...
1) I am unable to reproduce the problem, except when Tamper Protection is turned *on* not off.
2) Out of 8 sequential reboots with Tamper Protection turned *off* there are zero incidents.
3) Out of 8 sequential reboots with Tamper Protection turned *on" there are three incidents - and those are not in order of boot.
Very elusive!
Hope this info helps a bit.
Hmmm still having a few problems, even with tamper protection off. Things were running a little better with those PC fixes from Microsoft but even now NIS still playing up.
Strange and bizzare... NIS looks like it is still working. Just nothing seems to appear or change anything.
"Before you do call me back read up on Norton’s Community site about the recent problem with version 17.5.0.127 in regard to the disappearing icons located in the task bar and notification tray, and the problem with excessive. My problem is not with the support that I have had with Norton, but with the lack of answers that I am getting from Norton re the above problems. These problems began when ‘live updates’ installed the new engine [17.5.0.127] on Jan 20, 2010 which replaced of 17.1.0.19 which I had installed in December of 2009. I have had no problems with 17.1.0.19, but when ‘live updates’ installed 17.5.0.127 my icons in the task and notification tray disappeared and when I shut down ccsvchst.exe will/did not terminate. This is an annoying problem as one cannot get the Norton Window up to do scans and other tasks. I have three machines which run on XP Home Service Pack 3. All three machines began to have this problem when ‘live updates’ installed 17.5.0.127 and asked for a reboot of the system."
The above message was e-mailed to a support person at Norton after a request for a "call back". I was shocked when I was told that the person who called back indicated that no such problem existed. Anybody know if Norton was corrected this problem?
I also have this problem with disappearing tray icon.
My system specs:
Windows XP Prof + SP3
Norton Internet Security 2010 latest version (sorry can't look now, because of no tray - can't even open NIS GUI via Start bar), with latest updates.
Hmmm think they may have finally fixed it.
Just tried the .dll fix thats Tim want to test a few posts earlyer and NIS seems to be running fine now.
Test results
Before .dll change, NIS only ran 1 out of 10 restarts for me.
After the .dll change, NIS ran all 10 times in all the restarts.
Tim will probably post or sort something later to fix this issue soon I think :)
Back to happy days ^^

This is interesting news. More data is needed.
Tell me, do you have Tamper Protection switched *on"?
Do not change anything, this is strictly an informational request.
In my case TP is on and that's when the problem shows.
TIA
hi there I am having the same problems that are being discussed on this thread and whilst I am not sure if this is relevant thought I would share it. Having recently booted into safe mode then booted normally which on my system got the icon back and allowed access to norton I opted to select ‘early load’ since then ie about 5 normal boots everything seems to be working fine. As I say not sure if relevant But I thought I would mention it if it helps.
Tamper protection was turned off at the time when I was testing.
Although, I have now turned it on now. If I have any problems I will post on here.
Personally, I don't think TP did much (for me anyway). Least NIS is appearing more often than not IF they still anymore issues ^
For what its worth here is the time line [ my response to Norton Support in regard to the reload of Norton on my 3 machines] re my problems with the current issue of the icons which disappear. Note that early load was off and tamper protection was on for all three machines. Also note that Norton Support initially told me that my problem existed because 17.1.0.19 was either installed improperly or 17.5.0.127 was installed improperly. Also note that I have rebooted my desktops only once since the reinstall. One of them had problems which disappeared with a second reboot. The other did not have problems. The laptop has had no problems but it too has not been rebooted since the reload.
I might add that I have a very sophisticated home network including 3 computers, 4 external hard drives, 3 printers, and 5 different media players, 1 external optical drive, 3 Belkin hubs, a number of video, audio and USB extenders and converters, 4 different FS monitors, a Sony Blue Ray Player, A Bose System 48, 6 Bose roommates, and a very large flat screen all networked. This system requires a number of pieces of software [all up and running at the same time] other than windows xp and Norton to keep it going. Having been associated with computers from the days of the old IBM 7090/7094 I am fairly good at smelling a flaw when one developed. I do not think that my December loading of Norton Internet Security was improperly executed. In fact I have been running Norton on this system for 4 years without a problem.
Response to Norton Support:
"I installed Norton Internet Security on Dec 21/24 2009 on my three machines. I had no problem with any of these machines re Norton until this week [ 3rd week in Jan]. I believe that the above version [17.5.0.127] has a problem. I recently [via Live update] got a message that a new ‘engine’ required a reboot. When I rebooted, I was unable to get any of the icons to bring the Norton Window up. Neither the one on the task bar, the notification area, the one on the start menu, the one in the all programs menu nor the one located in the “engine folder’ would bring the Norton Window up. This happened on all three of my computers (two desktops and a laptop) after the required reboot. Your techies finally had to re-install Norton 2010 to get rid of the problem. After running several live updates today [3rd week in Jan] and a full system scan on all machines, Norton is again telling me that “a new engine” requires a reboot. If this is 17.5.0.127 I am reluctant to reboot as the current version on my machines [17.1.0.19] works just fine. Please advise if you are having problems with 17.5.0.127. I do not want to waste a day and a half on the phone with a techie reloading Norton Internet security again. Thank you"
Note: When I received a call back from Norton Support I was told there was no such problem as described in my previous posting. I indicated that I did not believe him. He told me I would receive a call back from engineering. I await the call.
Hi,
I just restarted my PC and I cannot launch NIS 2010. I already tried to reinstall it about 3 times but nothing changed. I also tried the removal tool and downloaded the latest version. It's not a virus, i'm sure about that !
How can i fix this issue ?
Thanks in advance,
John
