I have been an auto-upgrade subscriber since NIS 2008. When I upgraded from 2009 to 2010, I was left with a single computer usage. I upgraded my computer and now all my installations are used up (only 2 available).
I need to put it also onto a laptop, but I have no additional installations available. When I try to upgrade the only option available is to buy an extra token, or to buy a totally new subscription. The extra token is only available in US$ (or Canadian) and is only $10 cheaper than a new installation!
A new subscription is for up to three computers - which to me seems like a rip-off for those loyal customers who automatically upgrade.
What do I need to do to get what I would have got anyway as a new customer?
I think back in 2008, they only had subscriptions for 1 computer. I would have your key handy and give customer support a call via the free chat program. They can look up your subscription record and advise you what you can do. If necessry they can reset the computer activations. Tell them what you have done and what you want to do. Perhaps they can help you out in a special way in order to keep a customer. Here is how you can contact customer support. Also, you can look around to find cheaper NIS versions for up to 3 computers which are cheaper also in many legitimate places.
Just spent an hour on customer support and they installed it on my laptop for me.
I may not have used the correct Norton-speak terminology before. Thus I should have said that I had no "remaining Activations" after moving NIS from one PC to another. And since I had set up the subscription 2006, there was only one activation available at that time.
My gripe is that I used auto-update and I get a single activation, while a customer who lets their subscription lapse and buys a new one gets THREE activations for the same price as I got one - doesn't seem fair to me, especially when I found a 2005 and 2006 activation key as well when I checked though my txt files on my PC.

If you just renewed your subscription within the last 60 days, then I believe there is a return policy. Perhaps you can purchase a new version for 3 pc's and will be able to exchange the older one. I believe that is why a lot of people don't want the auto update in case policies do change like that one has over the years. Perhaps customer service will allow you to purchase the 3 pc version and use that key for your activation instead since the policy has changed.
As you now understand in 2006 there was only one activation subcriptions. You feel it is unfair to pay the same for one activation as others pay for three activations. I agree. Is it possible that you have auto-renewal set up and every subscription cycle Symantec renews your one activation license. You may opt out of auto renewal at any time. You have many options to purchase and to remain an active Norton client. I sense you still have questions....
You have the same options as any other Norton user to obtain a 3 activation licence. What product and version do you run and what is your current subscription status.
