Running NIS v21.1.0.18 on Windows 8.1 x64 PC. Whenever I run a game NIS starts doing something (icon in system tray changes) and starts using around 30%+ CPU causing the game to lag. I've tried disabling antivirus and smart firewall before launching but that does not help. Also tried setting NIS to not scan the folder containing the game .exe but that did not work either. Any other time Norton runs without any unusually high usage. Is there anything I can do besides force killing NIS services to keep this from happening?
Hi,
Rather than disable your protection have you tried enabling silent mode to see if that helps?
Keep us posted
Nope. I will try that and see if it helps.
Thanks.
Hello CCalahan
Also, try not to run other programs whle playing unless you have one of these rigs having like 16 gigs of ram and a power computer made for gaming.. I have Silent Mode turned off, but I do use Silent Mode. I list the games .exe. file in the User-Friendly Programs and use the Configure part and list the game's .exe file in there. I hang out in Game Spy Arcade a lot, but do not list that since I am there so often.
I also try not to schedule or have any other automatic updates or scanning going on when I want to play. That's why I do a lot of program updates and looking for updates on my own when possible. I do keeep NIS 21 on all the time and so is the computer on all the time also.

If it looks like an acorn with devil horns, that is silent mode.

Ok...I have played the game numerous times now and put NIS into silent mode before playing. NIS still spikes on me from time to time even in that mode. Had to completely shut Norton down to get game to smooth out. I do have a gaming rig (granted it is older) and monitor other things running but Norton is only program that is ever using a good portion of CPU. What is weird is that NIS does not do this all of the time.
Any other suggestions of what I can check?
When the CPU spikes, check Norton Tasks to see if anything is running. To do this: click Performance > Norton Tasks.
Also check to see if there are any other programs running at the time of the spikes. One of them may be 'phoning home' to check for updates.
Do you have any realtime AV other than norton?
Have you checked using any tools to record performance during game execution, ie process explorer or performance monitor?
I have been minimizing the game and going into task manager to check CPU/memory usage. The only software that shows any real usage is always the game and NIS. Other programs are running but as soon as I force kill NIS the game smooths out. The problem is NIS just don't know what it is doing.
Norton is the only AV/malware program I have. Have not used anything to monitor except task manager. Like I said previously though, when NIS is force killed the game is smooth and zero issues.
Does it happen at any particular time, like if you have been playing your game for several hours and not let your system become idol?
If I remember correctly, NIS will begin running background tasks after about 6 hours if you haven't let your system reach an idol state in that time.
Just a thought.
HI CCallahan,
May be this is out of topic, but if you can tell for which all games do you encounter this problem and whether its all authentic( ie not a cracked version).
- Some cracked versions of certain games behave in mischievous manner, triggering antiviruses to monitor them continuously.
- Also just check your Norton version is uptodate as certain previous versions have the problem of high resource usage.
- You may need to try a reinstall using nrnr or nrt
Hello
Minimizing a real time game can cause problems also. Remember, although the game is not a security program using real time featurres like a real time security program would, the game is still real time and being real time might some how be similar to a real time program. When I minimize my ut game when I am able to play, it does make the pings higher and therefore more strain on the game and servers. I've observed when others in GSA play UT while they are in away in GSA and they play, their pings are higher. Perhaps bringing up task manager behaves in the same way.
I'm probably pulling at straws here.....

Do you have any email applications open while you are playing the game? If so, then please close them before starting your game. A similar issue to yours was reported and resolved here:
Nope. Right when I launch the game it triggers NIS to spike with activity.
No email client running. No other CPU intensive activity.
The game is Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. It is not cracked but retail version so has to load off dvd. However, I use a launcher for the game which is a game mod that allows additional stadiums, kits, balls, etc. I have both the game exe and the launcher exe (they are in the same folder) excluded from scan. In fact the whole folder is excluded.
It really doesn't seem like a regular scan issue to me. Basically I start the launcher, then the game, and once the game launches I can immediately tell the game is lagging bad. I then minimize and go to task manager and can see that NIS is pulling around 35% CPU. I believe normally it will never exceed 10% if even that. And as stated before, it does not do it every time but probably 90% of the time it will spike. Even with Silent Mode enabled.
Hi CCallahan,
Can you use the 'Resource and Performance monitor tool' from task manager to monitor the the CPU usage by these two processes (nis.exe and game process+the game mod, use admin privilages for effective monitoring). Please go to Norton UI -> Performance -> Check the graph (Blue for CPU and yellow for Norton). If you see more part taken over by Yellow, its something false with norton and your game files. Did you notice the lag when just using the game only, not the game mod?
Please keep us posted..

Just to confirm; have you added game.exe and launcher.exe to the NIS Quiet Mode program list?
To check or configure this:
- Open NIS > Settings > General > Silent Mode Settings > Quiet Mode on Detection of: > User-Specified Programs > Configure
- In the 'Quiet Mode Programs' dialog box, add both game.exe and launcher.exe to the list and click Apply.
Could you please also upload some screenshots of your NIS Performance CPU/Memory graphs immediately after you finish a game session?
Instructions:
- Play the game for at least 30 minutes (the longer the better).
- When finished, close the game.
- Open NIS and click on the Performance link.
- Take a screenshot of the NIS Performance window with the CPU tab selected and save it to a file.
- Take a screenshot of the NIS Performance window with the Memory tab selected and save it to a file.
- Upload both of these files and insert them into your next post.
Thanks in advance.
Hello
I already mentioned trying to do that as that is what I do when I play my game. But I think the suggestion was passed by. The answer I believe was that the silent mode was on, but don't think he went as far as listing the games .exe files in the quiet mode settings for the programs. Doing this should eliminate any influence of Norton doing anything while playing. After finishing playing, then Norton does it's thing or else you can just run live update then also.
