Installed Version 21.1.1.7 today and still have the same issue.
Had to revert back to older version.
I am getting sick on Symantec not fixing the issue.
Can anyone from Symantec reply when the fix will be release ?
I can't believe it took me so long to find this thread but its not quite the same as my issue. It involves .tmp files, config_cur.dat and config_cur.dat.log. Sometimes the temp file it locks on is in windows temp sometimes it falls under the sretmp directory. I am going to try disabling advanced monitoring as explained in thread and if that doesn't work I will open a new thread.

Ever since I upgraded to NIS v21.1.17 a couple of weeks ago, my already under-powered Windows XP PC has been doing file I/O like crazy.
Culprit is NIS.EXE (according to Process Explorer, from sysinternals).
My Firewall Advanced Event Monitoring has always been OFF.
Now, I've turned the following NIS Settings OFF (or at least OFF until the next PC restart):

Automatic Download of New Version

Instant Messenger Scan

Disk I/O has gone down noticeably, but not completely. Yay!!

I just upgraded from 19 to the latest version and the bug still exists. It’s been over 2 years and still no fix to this bug. WTG.

With all these settings set to OFF I wonder why you still have NIS installed, your protection level with these settings is no more than 0%.
Enable most of these asap!

This forum is usless. Symantec just wants to sell and sell and not fix the product defects. I don't think they test their software for reliability at all.

Actually, the very basic antivirus and firewall is still active.
My underpowered PC is not useable with all that file I/O. I might try slowly turning each of those on in turn to figure out which service precisely is causing that massive file i/o.
Maybe Symantec will fix it, and I can turn everything back on again...
I had a dream that I bought a new Intel Core i7 desktop PC with 16GB RAM and SATA 6 and SSD drives with 64-bit Windows that could handle all this software abuse.
Then, I woke up and realized I can't afford new hardware right now. Lol!

Welcome to the Norton forum.
I have an older machine running 32-bit Vista and posted some comments here in Patrick McCabe's thread titled Is Norton Slowing Down My Computer? that might be helpful. Since you're using NIS v. 21.x the first suggestion (i.e., turn ON Smart Definitions) is not relevant since Smart Definitions are now the only definition set availble in newer versions of NIS.
You confirmed in message # 43 that the Advanced Event Monitoring of your firewall has always been turned OFF, so you might want to start a new thread about your high I/O. That will give your own problem better exposure and prevent slee2's thread from going off topic. If you go that route, be sure to post information about your CPU processor speed, amount of RAM, and Internet connection speed so we have a better idea about your system configuration.

Norton version 21.2.0.38 has resolved the problem on my PC.
Finally Symantec have fixed the issue.
Installed NIS 21.2.0.38 and everything seems to be stable.
Yes, 21.2.0 has the fix, there is also a separate hotfix that resets the bloated database file caused by this bug so please be sure to run LiveUpdate after 21.2.0 is fully installed and your system has been rebooted. You can expect a temporary increase in the number of firewall alerts after applying the hotfix.

Actually - for me everything has worked fine after a reinstall some weeks ago... but today NIS started writing more than 30GBs to my disk again :(
That made my PC unusuable... I don't know why: On 5 PCs I'm using Norton, only one has this issue...

I can't imagine any circumstances under which Norton Internet Security would write anything to your hard drive apart from a few MBs of definitions updates. Even a download of a complete version upgrade is only +/- 150MB
Something else must be downloading that sort of amount and I would be concerned that you are infected by malware unless you are running Windows 8 and it is doing something massive in the way of upgrading.
See what the more expert have to suggest apart from going to one of the recommended malware removal sites.

Is this NIS / NAV, or is it Norton Utilities bleaching your free disk space???
