Adding to cgoldman's Q's, Who is the computers manufacturer?

I have uninstalled/re-installed before and this has fixed the problem.

NIS is the only "solution" I have used with this device.

The point is... I don't want to repeat this procedure every three days.

I installed this latest instance on 3/20

Lenovo

Thank you for the new information. When you uninstalled, did you run Norton Removal Tool?

Did you reboot and then reinstall?

What is the source for the reinstall?

can you post a screen grab of the window when the error message appears?

Have you checked your log files?

forget it ... i would rather build a tree house

where [...] can i find a coder convention to address these issues?  it's mr. tea time

Your choice. I was merely trying to assist you. You never mentioned using Norton Removal Tool and this is the classic 1st step in resolution to problems like yours.

Good luck in the building of your tree house.

Hi gfrench27,

In regards to Subash's question about your compute'sr manufacturer and your answer Lenovo - past experience has shown that the Rapidboot installed on their systems have caused problems with Norton products startup.

It has been reported that the removal of Rapidboot (1.1 - I think the version is) has corrected this situation.  Also the reinstall of Rapidboot 1.12 (or something like that) has also fixed the problem (if you want to keep Rapidboot)

Please try it and get back with us - it is a lot easier than building a treehouse!

I have a Lenovo W820, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 64 bit. Norton Internet Security 2012 was installed with the computer and worked for about 2 months.

One morning I noticed the icon stopped showing up in the system tray and when clicking on the start menu icon it came up wit error 8504, 101 and told me to reboot, but that didn't fix it.

I downloaded NIS-UPGRADE-ESD-NoDefs-19-5-0-145-EN.exe and reinstalled and it works fine as long as I don't run live update. The first reboot after a live update and it comes up with the same problem.

I then tried uninstalling with the Norton Removal Tool and reinstalling and it's the same problem. Everything works until it does the first live update and Norton Internet Security 2012 becomes a brick. If I don't do a manual live update it works for a day or two until Norton does the update automatically and then it bricks again.

I saw someone with the exact same problem and configuration on this forum, but no solution. The software has become worse then useless at this point as I've had to spend a lot of time uninstalling and reinstalling with reboots in between and nothing seems to work. It seems to me there is some defect with one of the updates it's downloading that's disabling the software.

I'm wondering if there is a way to have live update just get new virus definitions and not version updates. I'm also wondering if there is a way to get a refund for the 3 year subscription I purchased so I can stop wasting my time with this and go find another antivirus product that's more stable.

Getting this error message on an old Dell Latitude running XP.

Rebooting now to see if this will fix the problem.

Yes 1.12 is the latest release but for me was only released 13th March 2012.
