I recently installed NIS 2009 on A machine running XP Pro SP3 (see specs below). The installation went smoothly and I was able to update NIS2009 and do a full scan, run a game etc.
On restart my PC went into a BSOD loop with the blue screen appearing just following XP load and in transition to the password screen. The blue screen transitioned to a restart very quickly but I once saw the following message;
IRQL not less or equal
Once in this loop I was unable to boot into safe mode. A minor panic set in.
I began to systematically unplug hardware components (based on the blue screen error message) until I was able boot into safemode. The conflicting components were both IDE drives. A standard floppy drive and a LiteOn CD burner.
After booting into safe mode I was able to uninstall NIS2009. Following this the PC started as usual.
I have previously run AVG and Zone Alarm, then Trend Micro security packages on this PC. Have scrubbed these from the system as best I can but still get the BSOD loop on restart if NIS is installed. I have also used other malware scanners to try to ensure that the NIS is being installed on as cleaner system as possible to no effect.
The issue is very repeatable.
Installed NIS 2009 on my partners machine (running XP home) no probs.
Since you had a few different security products installed previously, uninstalling through the Windows Add-Remove may have left remnants behind. You might want to run the removal tools specific for each:
There have also been problems with the Cyberlink software that comes bundled with the 1650. You might check this thread to see if you have any of the identified products.
Sorry for not keeping up but after making the post I have been unable to access the community page from home. Now posting from work.
I have used specific removal tools for both trend micro and AVG but couldn't find one for zonealarm. Thanks for the link, 'll give that a go as well.
I should also have mentioned that after all the removals and running the removal tools I ran a registry cleaner as well but that didn't help either. Otherwise the machine is running smoothly, better than ever in fact.
I haven't installed any bundled software, just the driver for the video card. But i'll look into it, thanks for the suggestion.
Cheers
Simon

At what point during this process did you run a registry cleaner? Can you tell us which one you used?
I ran CC cleaner after deleting unwanted programs and using the removal tools.

Are you still getting the BSOD?
Not now that NIS 2009 is unistalled. But yes, following installation of NIS 2009 I get BSOD on restart. Every time. Very reproducible effect. NIS2009 and computer seem to run fine until the restart.
Please take this question in the spirit intended, but have you used CCleaner before? Did you delete all the default registry entries that were presented to you?
Also, at any time during the uninstall of NIS 2009, did you use the Norton Removal Tool here to be sure to clear out any remnants?
As i previously said i m also facing same problem and i hadn't used anything which u guys r telling so it can't be a problem consisting of any other antivir suite or ccleaner etc.
This is either norton related or hardware related.
Thanks, I won't take anything personally, and appreciate any suggestions you have, thanks for your time.
Yes I've used cc_cleaner before. I have only run it recently after experiencing the BSOD problem. So the issue existed before and after running cc_cleaner.
Yes, I ran the NIS2009 removal tool prior to reinstalling it.
The version of NIS 2009 was firstly from a disc and then subsequently, following the BSOD issue, I downloaded the lastest version (don't remember off hand which one) from symantec web site and used that, with the same effect. Both were updated following the installation using the auto-update feature within NIS2009.
Confirm whether you are getting just IRQL_NOT_LESS or is it Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS?
Here is a screenshot of similar error:
Note the complete "Stop 0X..............." code -Verbatim. Note any driver/file name which caused this issue, in the above example it Ntfs.SYS. Also, note down the Address mentioned there. Reply back with the code, address and file/driver name from the error you get.
Simon_652, since the blue screen is fast, you may wish to disable the automatically restart option. Go to System Properties:Advanced:Startup and Recovery:Settings->System Failure:Automatically restart and disable that option. You may have to reboot after changing that option. Once the option has been changed, the next time you get a BSOD, the description should remain on the screen for you to see.
