Well the pulse updates run every few minutes, but I'm talking about a full blown "Automatic Live Update" as listed in the CPU Usage page.
So you're saying the "ALU" only runs when idle?
Also I ran a manually LU about 1/2 hour after the ALU and the manual LU found 2 updates: web site and virus updates.
I am sure "full-blown" LU. does run every few minutes if Streaming Def.s are on; if not, then it should run every four hours.
Not sure about Idle LU.; un-likely.
The help file says automatic Live Update runs every 4 hours. My question is, does it only run if the system is idle or will it run every 4 hours regardless if the system is idle or not?
If it only runs when idle, what's the longest amount of time it will wait before it forces a download?
The reason I ask is that I normally hibernate my laptop instead of shutting it down. This means when I bring it back up the time that has passed is normally more than 4 hours. I noticed it doesn't immediately kick off after resuming from hibernation.
A full LiveUpdate session runs once every hour if your computer is idle, but if it is due to run and your computer is not idle, it will wait for the next idle time.
Thanks for the response. So what’s the difference between an “Automatic LiveUpdate” and a “LiveUpdate” as listed in the CPU Usage window?
"Automatic LiveUpdate" - As it says, LiveUpdate running Automatically in the Background.
"LiveUpdate" - Manual LiveUpdate, i.e. actually clicking on the "Run LiveUpdate" on the U.I..
I don't think that's correct, since there is a column listed for "LiveUpdate that states whether it ran when the system was idle or not. If it can only be run manually then it could never run when idle.
Also "LiveUpdate" downloads more stuff that "Automatic LiveUpdate". For example, this morning the ALU ran on it's own and about 5 minutes later I ran LU manually. LU downloaded 2 fairly large (> 1 MB) Web Protection Definitions (antiphishing updates deemed "critical").
So it looks like ALU does not download antiphishing updates, but LU does. I'm not sure if pulse update does or not.
Manual LiveUpdate and Automatic LiveUpdate pull down exactly the same updates. If you run a manual LiveUpdate and it downloads updates, this means the updates became available after the last Automatic LiveUpdate ran. Had you not run LiveUpdate manually, the next Automatic LiveUpdate would have downloaded those same updates. You never have to run a manual LiveUpdate, but if you do, you would expect that sometimes it would download nothing, and sometimes it would download the "next updates in line to be downloaded", depending on when exactly you ran it and when updates get published.
If you have Streaming Def.s on, it should be running every-few-minutes.
Depnds when "Idle Timeout" is set for, which, by Default, runs after the system is idle for ten minutes.
