NIS2010 and Microsoft malicious software removal tool

Vista OS Home Premium 32 bit, Vista SP2

NIS 2010 17.8.0.5

It seems every month with the microsoft updates, the Malicious Software Removal tool is part of the updates

Two really simple questions

1. Does it interfer with the functioning of NIS2010, and should one elect NOT to allow that uMicrosoft update?

2. Does it seem that the malicious Software Removal tool takes a LONG time to process? Like 20 mins or so?

The Malicious Software Removal Tool does in fact take a long time to run on my Windows XP Home SP3 system with only  512 MB of RAM, it also takes a bit of time to run on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2 with 1 G of RAM.  It absolutely flies thru it compared to the other two systems on my Win 7 with 8 G of RAM.  So perhaps  you need to consider factors outside of Norton and Microsoft for your slowness.

Hi Calls,

One thing I would add in case you are not aware of it. The MS malicious software removal tool runs only once which is after reboot following the MS update. It does not run again after that and is suppose to remove itself.

Each month this process repeats.

More information on the MS malicious software removal tool can be found at the following locations.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

I would have to disagree with you.  THe MRT tool remains on your computer.  Try this. Click start and then run.  Then type in mrt.exe and click ok. That will open the remover tool.

Hi Tywin7,

Take a look at my wording, I said "supposed to remove itself".

If you look at the two links I provided, it clearly states that. I am not convinced that it actually does remove itself entirely so I said "supposed to".

I am also not clear but what typing that command might go online to download the tool again. I have not checked that first hand so I simply stated what is said on the MS website.

The first link also states the following:

Note The version of the tool delivered by Microsoft Update and Windows Update runs in the background and then reports if an infection is found. To run this tool more than once a month, use the version on this Web page or install the version that is available in the Download Center.

In the second link a moderator states:

The Malicious Software Removal Tool does not use an installer. Typically, when you run the Malicious Software Removal Tool, it creates a randomly named temporary directory on the root drive of the computer. This directory contains several files, and it includes the Mrtstub.exe file. Most of the time, this folder is automatically deleted after the tool finishes running or after the next time that you start the computer. However, this folder may not always be automatically deleted. In these cases, you can manually delete this folder, and this has no adverse effect on the computer.

Beyond that I can only say it "used" to remove itself but I have not checked that personally in a long time. MS website seems to still indicate that it does, whether actually true or not.

I think the temporary file that is created is by the tool deleted but the actual tool remains in the system 32 folder.
