Greetings! First post ... I am running NIS2011 v 18.1.0.37.
On my Vista SP2 Home Premium laptop, Reputation Scan identified some Unproven files. They were *.msi files -- a bunch of them -- with a Norton Community rating of Less than 5 Users. The files were identified as less than 1 week old but had older actual file dates, according to the Properties sheets. I quarantined them all (two pages worth using Quarantine Export to .txt file).
Today, I went to Control Panel to uninstall Java Update 21. Explorer crashed/restarted (that never happens). I selected Java and Uninstall. I was informed that a 'network resource' was unavailable, with a Browse (UAC icon) button to find the missing file: installation package jre1.6.0_21-c-l.msi ... which was supposed to be in App Data/LocalLow ... blah, blah.
Is it possible that I have quarantined a bunch of *.msi files that belong to this missing file?
Quarantine reported that these *.msi files were removed from c:/windows/installer ... which I discovered today does not exist, or at least I can not see it (hidden folders/files and file extensions are all visible in Folder Options).
Should I 'restore' these files to their 'original location' and see if Java will uninstall? Or is that a risk I should not take?
When Java refused to uninstall, I pulled the RJ45 from my Vista laptop and am reluctant to reconnect it until I get a better idea of what to do.
Thanks for any advice ... btw ... I tried about 5 forum nicknames and it wouldn't let me have 'em so I ended up with ... tinfoilhat
