NIS2013 on XP SP3: virus & spyware definitions are not up-to-date, 'Fix Now' doesn't

I upgraded from NIS2012 to NIS2013 on 3 PC's today.  All went fine on the Win 7 & Vista machnes but not so fine on the XP SP3 machine.

The upgrade went ok, but on performing the first manual 'Live Update' (which worked fine), NIS then decided that my computer was at risk 'Your Virus & spyware definitions are not up-to-date. Your PC may be at risk of infection.'

Clicking on the 'Fix Now' button ran a 'Live Update' which worked ok, but 'Fix Now' then says 'Fix not complete, Protection Updated Not Fixed'.

Have tried a reinstall of NIS2013 (including the Norton Removal Tool), but the same happens again on the reinstall.

Found a thread on this forum suggesting that I should try a live update with AntiSpam turned Off. (Settings->Antispam->Norton AntiSpam->Off), but that didn't help (Live Update worked, but NIS still wasn't fixed).

Reverting back to NIS2012 unless anyone has any better ideas.  Thanks in advance ;)

Hi! MarkBevan,

Welcome to the Norton Community!!

Do you still have the Norton Removal Tool on your computer?

Tech83  :)

Hiya Tech83.  yes I still have the Norton Removal Tool on my computer.

Cheers

Mark

Hi! Mark,

Excellant; now please check an see if you still have the installer files for your NIS 2013 or NIS 2012 as you'll need either of these to complete the necessary procedure to correct this issue.

Tech83  :)

Yes I still have both the installer files for NIS 2013 & NIS 2012.

Hi! Mark,

Excellent.  At this time if you are using the Norton ID Safe function please export your ID Safe now if your not using it then we'll proceed.

Tech83  :)

Thanks for your help.  I'm not using Norton ID Safe.

Hi! MarkBeavan,

Ok, We'll proceed then.  But First you must agree not to visit any other sites until this issue is corrected because some of the steps needed to correct this issue will leave your system temporarily unprotected (provided your not using a router).  You'll need to stick with this forum site. Are you ready?

Thanks,

Tech83  :)

Thats fine.  I have a laptop viewing this forum and the desktop with the problem doesn't need to be doing anything else.  Both are behind a router.

Excellent MarkBevan.

Do you have MalwareBytes' AntiMalware or SuperAntiSpyware installed on the affected computer?  If not, do you have a flash drive?

Tech83  :)

Yes both of those are installed, and I have a flash drive ;)

Awesome MarkBevan!!

If both MBAM & SAS are both fully updated go ahead an run the Uninstall for NIS from either the Start Menu or Add/Remove Programs.  Do Not run the Norton Removal Tool at this time.  Restart the computer as prompted and let me know when your back at Windows desktop.

Thanks,

Tech83  :)

MBAM & SAS are both fully updated.  I have uninstalled NIS via the start menu, rebooted  & am back at the desktop.

MarkBevan,

Very good; now run the Norton Removal Tool (following the on-screen instructions) twice performing a reboot at the end of each run.  Let me know when you've returned to the Windows desktop; if any errors occur let me know these as well.

Tech83  :)

The Norton Removal Tool has been run twice, with a reboot at the end of each run and there were no error messages.  I'm back at the desktop.

MarkBevan,

Ok.  Please Click Start>Run.  In the resulting box type in CMD.exe an press enter.  In the new Window type in CHKDSK /V an tell me if any errors are listed.

CHKDSK wasn't terribly happy:

Detected minor inconsistencies on the drive.  This is not a corruption.
CHKDSK is recovering lost files.
Recovering orphaned file tmp.edb (10807) into directory file 10433.

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.

Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

MarkBevan,

Go ahead and enter CHKDSK /F  in the same window then press enter.  At the resulting message Type Y then press enter.  This will schedule a disk check for the next time Windows is restarted.  Type exit into the window an press enter to close it.  Restart the computer an wait for the check disk to complete.  Let me know what errors are listed as being fixed once your back at the Windows desktop.

Sorry for the delay, had to collect my son ;)

Hi! MarkBevan,

Quite alright.  Please repeat the steps to open the command prompt an re-run CHKDSK /V to verify that all errors were fixed.
