One of my machines that I just use for some junk stuff uses Win XP ( I already know about Win XP end-of-life). NIS21 has worked fine on it for months. Starting about 8-9 days ago, nis.exe doesn't terminate at shutdown about 80% of the time. More often than not, I have to "endtask" to shut off nis.exe prior to shutdown. Otherwise nothing is changed with the system and there has been no new software other than NIS program updates. Any thoughts about why this shutdown issue might have recently cropped up?
In addition, also in the last 8-10 days I've noticed that just checking SUPPORT > ABOUT to check the version number creates an application fault in symhtml.dll, causing NIS to shutdown. So I reboot when that happens. This has happened 3 times when I check the version number by that method.
Did you use Norton Remove and Reinstall (aka NRnR) tool for doing reinstallation? Else please try ‘Get support’ option from NIS gui… If it fails to find anything, use NRnR for reinstallation.
FYI: That dll file or related files may be corrupted. NOTE: NRnR can remove other Norton products also.
I have the same problem but I also noticed that nis.exe is keeping my internet connection alive. I use netSpeedMonitor and I found my connection staying at 0.04 Mbit/s constantly, after checking NIS web activity it shows nis.exe running, this also started the same time as the shutdown issue with nis.exe, of course it figures in together, this all started roughly a month or 2 ago.
Just wanted to add that I have used extensively my XP SP3 system for 3 days with at least 15 reboots and about the same amount of cold starts and nis.exe didn't hang a single time, I guess I'm lucky...
By the way, I have Auto LU disabled, only manual LU's and Optimizer also set to OFF.
Same thing has been happening for me the past few weeks. This is a problem with the program that could use some attention. Don't suggest that I delete and re-install. Been there, done that, including NRT.
Hi, BH. As I suggested in message #5, logging off first gives nis.exe time to close, as if there are other active programs, then nis.exe will likely be the last one to close.
Logging off before Shutdown, makes this a rare occurence for me.
