NMS auto-start?

Hi,

Do we need to do anything to make NMS auto-start so that features like remote-wipe and remote-lock work?  That is, when I start up my phone, I don't see NMS in the list of running tasks in the Android Task Manager.  Does remote-wipe, etc. work without needing to run Norton manually first after the phone starts up?

Thanks!

Ah, great!  I didn't know you could test it out that way.  Works as advertised.  Thanks!

I am trying to decide between NMS and Lookout.

I notice that the Lookout product will now allow you to remotely turn on the GPS for location services if it was turned off when the phone was lost or stolen. Is Norton working on adding this feature? Or is it already added?

Also does NMS depend upon data services or wifi being available to function? And if needed, can it turn them on from SMS commands?

Thanks!

Hi TomLent.

I have not used and do not know Lookout, so I will not comment on it.

At the moment Norton Mobile Security (NMS) does not give you the ability to turn GPS on or off remotely.  I am sure Norton would like to be able to do this but I have no idea if they are working on it, and am fairly sure that they would not say anything until the feature were released, even if they were.

Myself, I leave GPS enabled all the time.  Initially I was concerned that it would drain the battery but experience seems to show that it does not and that it is in fact only used when an app needs it.

NMS makes use of pretty much whatever connection it can get.  The more connectivity you have the more useful it is.  If you just had a tablet without a data connection and with the WiFi normally turned off it would be pretty difficult for Norton to do any location or remote action.  I assume you are thinking of using it on an Android phone.

With the paid version of NMS the following features are available though SMS:-

Lock your device

Locate your device

Make the device scream.

Wipe the device.

The "Sneak Peek" feature is not available via SMS.

If you want to try out NMS you can try the free Lite version which should give you a fairly good idea of how it works and how it will meet your needs.

I hope the above answers your questions and is of some use.  Do feel free to come back with any more questions if you wish.  But do not expect Norton to tell you what they will or will not do with their software in the future.  :smileywink:

Thanks for your reply. Yes I'm considering using it on an Android (I'm a long time 360 user on my PCs and considering going to 360 everywhere to add NMS for my Droid).  I guess the key to not having the GPS drain your battery is probably just making sure you do not inadvertently leave apps running that are tracking location of the phone (probably a good idea anyway!)

If you do decide to try it do let us know how you find it.

All the best.
