NMS is troublesome for me - Too many issues with NMS - I wont recomend

What should we expect from a good antivirus? to block viruses to enter in your system. In way Norton works amazing, but it just keep scanning phone and make phone slow. It irritates me.

Then this app uses too much battery resource. I was facing this issue with my Motorola Defy phone. Now I'm using Samsung Galaxy Grand duos. Yet the issue is not fixed yet.

This issue was fixed on call by disabling something, but when I reinstall MNS on my new phone I'm not sure what to disable, So I'm facing this problem again.

Apart from this I've noticed few more issues with it.

When I run backup, I do not know where it is saved, if you say it is saved on the Norton cloude, I was unable to restore my backed up contacts from cloude, so for me backup utility get 0 marks.

Web Protection only works with Android default application. I hate Android's inability to work with multiple tab, so I use Chrome, and NMS fails to give web protection, so Web Protection also gets 0 marks

In android market there are many apps which has push ads / notification. NMS should have capability to block such apps, which NMS does not. I had to install "bony ad push finder" for the same.

So for me NMS failed to impress me big way. Renewing is due in 50 odd days, but I'm unsure if I should go with NMS or other antivirus for my device.

Not really... few tweaks are went over me... anyways... explianing thing once again.

If reinstallation is the solution for multiple issues we face, that clearly indicates either the issue is with the OS (in this case Android JB) or the application (in this case NMS). I would have accepted this in beta version, but with final version these "Reinstallation" solution doesnt work for me.

Let me clear myself to Smithy... Hope I'm not being rude to you Smithy :) :)

Smithy Said: I have a Samsung Galaxy S 2 and have not found any battery issues for a while now with NMS

I leave wifi and GPS off still I need to charge my phone every night. When I analyse I feel NMS using good amount of battery. Please compare your S2 performance with and without NMS, you will find huge difference in it. I hate to say this but thats the fact I observed.

Smithy Said: In this question or issue are you referring to the Enable and Disable of the Device Administration of NMS ? which may prevent uninstalling NMS ?.

I'm not taking about device admin, it was somthing to do with the services, I guess I need to figureout myself. Or if you can help me with it... I'm not sure

Smithy said: Unfortunately as far as i know all ad detector apps in Google Play state they will only find and detect the apps that have ads and they cannot block them.

Fine I'll take that, but at least the work BonnyAdPushFinder 's work shoud be done by NMS

As you informed, about Norton Spot Ad Detector, why cant it be plugged in NMS?

BTW thank you very much to let me know about this.

I'll rethink if to renew my licence with NMS or not only after I find proper fix for it.

BTW after criticising I should mention that call blocking works absolutely fine with me, I just love this.

Hi akshaykarandika

No worries :smileywink: you have not been rude at all. :)

I understand your frustration that the NMS app has not been working  correctly for you

and your Android devices.

As i have read, seen and experienced over the years it is a bit of a difficult situation to

be able to have all apps work and behave properly on all the different manufactured

Android device that are available on the market for consumers.

And it would appear that you have had a bad run with NMS on your devices.  :(

On charge time with most of the Android smartphones that i read about and use i find

it is pretty normal to have to recharge each day. ( Fair amount of use being - surfing the

internet, mail, mp3 tunes, games etc).

I have only experienced a device that would go for a few days or more if not used too

much and that was my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that i had. :)

And i am glad to help with the info regarding ad detector apps and Norton Spot.

I think the reason why they are separate  apps (NMS and Spot) is it allows the dev

teams to concentrate on the features of the apps a bit better, making for better apps. :)

I am still a little unsure about the settings for NMS that could conserve battery consumption

in regards to the services. The old Anti-Theft control panel for NMS allowed the user to

change the location frequency for the Locate Anti-Theft feature. Is that what you are thinking

about.?

If there is anything we can help with we will do our best to assist. :)

And it is great news that you like the Call Blocking  feature of NMS.:smileyhappy:

And finally if you continue to have an issue with NMS Backup as i mentioned in the previous

post we can assist with that with things like a CatLog that can report back what the issue is

with that feature and your device. Which can then be passed on to the Norton Team. :)

One last thing you could try with battery consumption would be to uninstall NMS from your device

and download and install again from Google Play and skip the Sign In step and test NMS with

just the Anti-Malware feature to see if there is any big battery usage differences. Might be worth

a try and test. :)

Otherwise thank you for your honest feedback and i hope that info above helps.

Cheers.:smileywink:

Hey Smithy,

THankx for understanding my free stastion (Frustration)

As you suggested "One last thing you could try with battery consumption would be to uninstall NMS from your device

and download and install again from Google Play and skip the Sign In step and test NMS with

just the Anti-Malware feature to see if there is any big battery usage differences. Might be worth

a try and test. :)"

Certainly I'll give it a go... will update this thread later

No worries :smileywink: .

I look forward to finding out how the test goes with just running NMS

as an Anti-Malware app only.

Cheers. :smileywink:

Smithy,

It worked fine... so whats causing the issue?

Hi akshaykarandika

Thank you for keeping us posted. :)

It could be the location feature that is chewing thru the battery at a fast

rate, you could try the following test.

The following test could go either of 2 ways being it might consume a lot

of battery :smileysad: or might not consume much battery at all :smileyhappy:, i really do not

know what will happen to be honest but it is worth a try.

So the first step would be to uninstall NMS then download again from

Google Play and this time Sign In and activate the full version of NMS.

Or a quicker way is to go into the Application Settings and Clear Data for

the NMS app. Then open the app and swipe thru to the Sign In screen.

Then to see if NMS is consuming a lot of battery because it is attempting

to locate your device all the time would be to disable a Android setting.

And that would be to disable all Location methods from the Android Settings

on your device.

Menu > Settings > Location Services or something similar as i am looking at

the Jelly Bean OS settings.

Then disable Use Wireless Networks and GPS if it is enabled.

And now again you can monitor the battery consumption to see whether or

not the location system of NMS will use more or less battery.

It might use more battery because it will try more often to locate the device, then

again it might use less because it cannot locate the device because it has no method

of doing so.? Not sure on this but it is just a test. :)

Also one thing you can monitor when location methods are enabled is how may times

does NMS Locate your device, and this can be done from the NMS web Control Panel.

https://mobilesecurity.norton.com/

Use the link above to log in and check the Locate section to see the most  Rencent

Locations for your device, ther has been users in the past that have noticed that NMS

continuously locates there device consuming battery power.

I think the location frequency is suppose to be 12 or 24 hours but i will try and check on that. :)

I will be keen to know how you go with this test.   :)

Keep us posted. :smileyhappy:

Cheers. :smileywink:

Smithy,

As soon as location feature turned off, norton stopped consuming battery. So it seems the issue was with that.

 Thank you for your suggestion.

However, I tried installing Spot ad finder, but it said spot ad finder is not compatible with my grand... How can I use it then?

Hi akshaykarandika

I will notify the Norton Team of the issue you have with the battery consumption

with your Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos when the Location feature is enabled.

I have a few more questions being -

Is your Galaxy Grand Duos running the JellyBean OS ? if yes what version number.?

If no what OS do you have installed.?

And what country or region do you live in.? This question is to try and work out why

the Norton Spot app is not compatible with your device. Sometimes there are only

certain countries or regions that have access to certain apps from Google Play.

Cheers. :smileywink:

Hey Smithy,

I'm using Jellybean 4.1.2 and I reside in India (Asia region)

Hi akshaykarandika

Thank you for that info. :)

Here is something you could try with your device -

Make sure your device has a good mobile data or WiFi signal before trying the

steps below. :)

Enable the Location features on your device and then go to the Norton Mobile

Security (NMS) Website on your PC and log in -

https://mobilesecurity.norton.com/

Once logged into the NMS Web Control Panel on your PC select the device being

the Galaxy Grand Duos which will take you to the Remote Web Command options.

Go ahead and use the Lock Device option with the NMS web Control Panel.

The wait until you get the notification in the Control Panel that the device has been

Locked.

Once the device is Locked go ahead and use the Web Control Panel to Unlock the

device, don't enter the pin into the device, unlock it with the Web Control Panel

Unlock Device option.

Hopefully this will fix what appears to be a location frequency issue with your device

and NMS. The default Location frequency should be 24 hours.

When this is complete you could reboot the device and now monitor the battery usage

with NMS and also with the Location features enabled, you do not have to enable GPS.

Let us know how you go. :)

Cheers. :smileywink:
