NMS vs. "Norton Security and Anti-Virus"

I originally purchased Norton Mobile Security 2.0 for my Android phone (and really like it.)

I recently noticed that I now have two apps installed: "Norton Security" and Norton Anto-Theft.

And I just learned about another mobile app from Symantec called "Norton Security and Anti-Virus".

So...what is the difference between these four apps? I'm not sure which one I should have on my phone.

Hi Bulldoggy

Norton Mobile Security has 2 names in the Android Market being Norton Security and

Antivirus and Norton Mobile Security Lite which are the same Symantec Norton app for

Android mobile phones, the retail pack and Norton Online Store version is called Norton

Mobile Security.

When installed on the device NMS will list as Norton Security in the Apps Menu. From the

details in your post it would appear you have a early version of NMS 2.0 which should be

updated to the newer version 2.5. If the purchase of NMS was from the Norton Online Store

or a retail store pack and you still have a active valid licence (product key) you will need to

download the most recent apk file from the link provided and install the new version-

www.norton.com/nms

Just follow the steps to download and install.:-)

Or you could try running LiveUpdates manually from the NMS menu to see if the updates

will come thru using that method

.

If it was a Android Market purchase it would pay to update thru the Market App on your

Android Device by going to Market > Menu >My Apps and Norton Mobile Security.

The second app mentioned is a plug in or addon for the paid full version of Norton Mobile

Security being the Norton Anti-Theft Plug In. This plug in adds to the standard full version

NMS Anti-Theft features adding Locate and Track the device, Sneak Peek photos and

Remote Lock with a personal message of choice on the screen of the locked device.

These features can be accessed from the Norton Anti-Theft Website after downloading and

installing and registering the device with Anti-Theft Plug In for NMS.

It is well worth adding these features to the full version of NMS as it is free as long as you

have a active subscription of NMS.:smileyhappy:

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to come back to the forum.:smileyhappy:

Cheers:smileywink:

Let's see if I have this right...

Originally: I purchased Norton Mobile Security 2.0 from the Symantec website.

Currently:

I have an app that identifies itself as Norton Security in the apps menu, and Norton Mobile Security within the application itself. By whatever name, the app I have is at version 2.5.

An important feature of the paid version of Norton Mobile Security 2.0 was the ability to remotely locate, wipe and scream my phone. The free version already had the ability to remotely lock my phone. It seems that these four 'remote access' features were spun off to a new app known as Norton Anti-Theft. In addition, a fifth 'remote' feature was added: the ability to remotely snap a picture of the thief. I currently have NAT version 1.2.

Basically correct so far?

To make it even more confusing to me, Norton (Mobile) Security has a feature called Anti-Theft, which seems to duplicate some of the features of NAT. What is the difference between the Anti-Theft component of Norton (Mobile) Security and NAT?

It seems that the same marketing department that saddles Symantec's otherwise outstanding security applications with confusing names was assigned to work on the mobile apps. To make matters worse, the Norton Anti-Theft website has not been sized for a mobile phone, making the pages very hard to navigate at the best of times, and certainly not when one is in a panic over their lost phone.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Bulldoggy.

I have to agree with you there does appear to be some opportunity for confusion.  To my mind the titles show signs of a rapidly changing market.....  ;-)

So take into account the fact that I may well be confused when I try to answer you.

What appears to have started life as Norton Mobile Security Beta and was focused on smartphones was migrated on to a production app.  This can be obtained either from the Android Market or directly from Norton if you pay the license fee and get a keycode to unlock it.  The Android Market version comes in two flavours, first there is the free "Lite" version and then if you pay for an upgrade you get extra features (partly Anti-Theft enhancements).  Both of these products should now have moved up to version 2.5.

The paid versions of what I will call NMS, have a range of four Anti theft features.  Being Lock/Locate/Wipe and Scream.  These all work via SMS messages from other phones.  If you have GPS enabled on the phone with NMS and it is in sight of a reasonable number of satellites then you can get a very accurate fix on the phone.

To throw in a possible red-herring, Norton also introduced Norton Tablet Security, for Tablet devices because these could not make full use of the SMS functionality on phones, and it also looked better on the larger screens.

Then having heard a number of customers ask to be able to use the Anti-Theft features of NMS via the internet they introduces Norton Anti-Theft which gives a similar range of functionality to the Anti Theft features in NMS but can be used with laptops, tablets or phones.  This is generally a paid app, but for those people who have already paid for the Anti-Theft features of NMS on their phones Norton have provided it via a free plugin on the Android Market that will work when NMS is installed.

So (if you are still with me) Norton Anti theft comes as a free gift for users with phones already loaded with NMS.  You can still use all the NMS anti-theft features but can then also access the Norton Anti-Theft features via the web.  Normally you would be expected to do this from a full screen device which is why the website is designed for that.  If you are using a phone then (unless you want to sneak peek) I think the SMS functionality is probably better.

I would add that I have found the location accuracy of Norton Anti-Theft does not come near that of NMS Anti-Theft on most of the occasions that I have tried it (with GPS enabled).

Has that helped at all?

If you still have questions please feel free to come back.  I will do my best.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I think I 'get it' now.

Regarding Norton Anti-Theft vs. the anti-theft features of Norton Mobile Security: It does make sense for Symantec to setup a separate website for NAT because if your phone is lost or stolen, it's good to know that you can lock your phone from any web-connected computer or tablet in case you can't reach your 'buddy' or someone else to ask to lock your phone.

And it could be good to have the NAT add-on on your phone, in case your buddy (or someone else) calls you to ask to locate or lock their phone.

So I'll cut the Symantec marketing department some slack here, since the technology seems to be advancing faster than their ability to implement appropriate names for products.

Why do you have to reply to problems in a pedantic manner>?  I ONLY WANT NORTON TO FIX, or tell me why, I'm being told to upgrade when I paid for FULL and too much money since I have not been able to use it - Lite just started working with recent upgrades. I bought the FULL version in March of 2012. 6 months later I still don't have full service. I gave you enough money over the years for the amount of time I have NOT been able to access/utilize what I pay for.  I will give you any info needed if you contact me.  I'd prefer if you just adjust your records.  My Norton Mobile was sold to me and installed by a Norton Tech via phone, when I called to report a problem w/A V on PC. He saw I was calling from android and proceeded with above.... Then I find out it was much cheaper in the apps stores.

After 15-20 years of using Norton, I am keeping Mobile and if you do not upgrade this as paid for- I will contact bank re: all charges I have not been able to use but paid for, i.e.. The two years left on my subscription that I cannot use and this Mobile App you keep wanting more money for - when it couldn't be accessed for 6 months.

I've had to purchase other Security due to this nonsense.

Thank you.

Hello again impatienceXtrm.

I'm sorry to see that you are still so upset but I cannot fully understand your post and it is unclear to whom you are addressing the comment about replying in a "pedantic manner".  If it is me I am sorry that this has added to your frustration.

If it was me you may wish to know that I am not a Norton Employee and merely give my time here free of charge to try and help other users of Norton products.

As I remain unclear what exactly is the problem that is worrying you I am unable to offer any further advice.  Maybe someone else will be able to.
