No Backups recognized even though N360_BACKUP has recent files

I have done backups every few days recently and decided to see if I could Restore some files. But the Restore function can't find any Backups (View All gives No backup set selected).

There is a problem with the external HD where the Backups have been done: the disk no longer is able to delete/move/rename/copy. files. Files can be opened with their usual apps (picture and video viewers, Acrobat files, etc.) and folders look OK.

I'm using Win7 but I can't find any disk diagnostic programs-except Defrag, which is unusable because the disk is too full (less than 10% free space remaining). I've tried several things including removing the disk and re-connecting it after re-boting; using  a program called Unlocker (it couldn't find any Locked handles but tried to delete a folder and then a single file anyway, claiming success but not achieving it); un-setting the Read-only attribute and then finding it hadn't actually been changed after clicking on the Apply button.

So, how could Backups of some files have been done up to May 8 and none of them can be found by Restore file?

Make a new folder on that drive and add some files and junk in it.

If you can delete, move, rename, and copy files within that folder but not the rest of the drive then it's a ownership and permission problem.  Sounds like the rest of the drive is only set for "read and execute" for your username.

Try the Portable Restore Utility(Arestore.exe) as mentioned in the following Symantec and let us know the results:
