no internet after removing Systemworks

I own a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop computer with Windows XP Home Edition and SP3 on it and have had various versions of Norton System Works installed on the machine since I bought it in  2004.

I got the "Norton [product name] is not working properly due to a problem that has occurred during LiveUpdate..." message several days ago which was followed by a pop-up screen directing me to a Norton webpage with instructions on how to fix it.  It told me to uninstall and re-install the Norton software so after downloading the Norton Removal Tool and running it twice (as instructed), I lost my internet connection.  (Note - I've since learned from the Norton website that there is a hot-fix for this error - why didn't Norton send me that info when it was made available?)

After a few phone calls to Norton tech support (no help at all) and my ISP provider (confirmed its not the problem since I can connect wirelessly with my work laptop), I am at a loss as to how to fix the problem.  During one of my phone calls to Norton, I spoke to a Level 2 Supervisor who walked me through some manual changes to the registry to delete any files missed by the removal tool - mostly removing folders under "Software".  But as you can guess, there is still a problem.  I've searched the registry and can still find settings related to Norton and Symantec but am afraid to delete them since I'm not sure what will happen.  I've also manaully deleted several folders and files from the harddrive that the removal tool missed.

My ISP provider pointed me to Device Manager to check the network card and we found that the drivers show a problem.  In fact, there are two Norton Drivers that are shown with the label "Symantec Network Security Miniport" in addition to the card driver.  I can't delete the drivers since the system reports they may be needed during boot up.  I bought and installed a new network card hoping the system would ignore the conflict with the old card but that did not fix the problem.

So now I am turning to the community boards to see if anyone can help me.  I think the problem is related to the registry but I'm not sure how to fix it.  Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance for the help.
