What VPN software / service do you use?  Am I correct that this is only when you are 'away from the conpany network' (at home or on the road)?

It is just a Microsoft VPN connection.

Device Name- WAN Miniport (PPTP)

Device type- vpn

Server type - PPP

Transport- TCP/IP

Authentication- MS CHAP V2

Compression- MPPC

PPP multilink framing- off

Then there is the server IP address and the client IP address

When I connect, it is looking for an IP address

Thanks

Forgot to add, yes, I only connect to VPN when at home.  Not when I am traveling.

Maybe hold off on the uninstall-reinstall until the VPN connection gets looked at.

In your History Logs (in NIS) can you go to the blocked SSDP message and post a screen shot of the 'More Details' for one of those entries?  Just make a screen shot of; open Paint and save as a png type file.  When you want to post a message here, just load the image via the 'little tree' thingy on the message editing tool bar.  Select your file and upload it; you may want to reduce the size to medium.  Do you have or did you import any custom firewall rules from NIS2008; perhaps some your IT department set up for the VPN (just curious)?

Ok, folks.  After 7 consecutive successful restarts, I am going to say my issue is resolved.  After reading your suggestions about reading history details, I noticed that there were several entries both when I was connected, and when I couldn't connect, saying 'Unauthorized access blocked (Open Process Token)'. Details show 'Actor:C\program files\google\update\googleupdate.exe'.  'Target C:\program files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.5.0.135\ccSvcHst.exe'

I remembered that I had downloaded google earth about a month ago.  I removed program google earth and also google update and rebooted.  Voila--no more of those entries in the history, and my machine is connecting to the internet every time I restart!

Thank you for your guidance.  You provide a great service to those of us who are not so technical.  I appreciate it!

Wow, you just never know what will cause an issue.  Often it’s the little thing you would least expect.

Hi -

Glad to see that you have resolved your issue - it only shows the complexities of software interaction.

I would like you to reinstall Google Earth, etc. and try it again just to confirm the problem.

Take care.

Hi slugger26,

If you can get to a command prompt on your system (e.g., ===> Run/cmd )  then you might try to enter one of the TCP/IP diagnostic commands there.

Once you get the command prompt with the black screen, then you could type:

nslookup

or,

ipconfig/all

The first command will tell you whether you system is connected to working name servers. If you get some kind of error message there, then something is wrong with the name server setup or connection.

The second command will tell you the details of your current tcp/ip connection, and you could look at the output to see if there is anything abnormal or undefined there.  It might require a system specialist to interpret this to see if in fact there is anything abnormal there.

I have to go to a meeting right now, but I thought I would send this so you could try to do a little tcp/ip debugging in the mean time.

ipconfig/all: server: unknown address:  fec0:0:0:ffff::1

*** unknown can't find ipconfig/all: no response from server

Hi slugger26,

Since you are using Windows 7, you have the advantage of being able to run the Windows Network Diagnostics Framework, which should be able to determine where the problem lies and offer suggestions that will restore your connectivity.  Please see the following for guidelines on running the NDF:

I have just tried to disable the firewall and am still unable to connect to the internet. Is there anything else I can try?

I have recently installed 360 v5 on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Since installing, the computer failed to boot with an error message to do with the root menu. However, I had this problem fixed this week and Windows xp was reloaded. I have installed 360 again and now am unable to access the internet using my mobile data usb. I am pretty clueless about computer stuff, but thought it would be worth asking on here to find out what I need to do to enable a connection whilst keeping 360 running if this is possible?  Thanks for your help.

In this case,i would like to inform you that this issue need not be caused by the product.

Can you check if you have any other antivirus products like Microsoft Security Essentials,Mcafee,AVG or Zone Alarm installed in this computer ?

If yes, please remove the same and try.If not,you can uninstall the product to see if that fixes the internet connectivity.

From my experience, you should still have the same problem after the removal as well.

Seems to be there is some else from the internet service provider that needs to be take care. Can you contact them and check ?
