No Standby

My computer has had a setup running for a number of years where the computer automatically goes into Standby and then Hibernated after a couple of hours non use.  It then was automatically woken up during the night to carry out housekeeping tasks and then re-hibernated ready for me in the morning.  Have now just installed NIS 2011 and the computer will no longer go into Strandby.  Has anyone any thoughts?

Hi billjf,

What operating system and service pack are you running and is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

What is the version of NIS 2011 you are running? (Check Support > About in NIS)

What was your main security software before NIS2011 and how did you go about uninstalling it and installing NIS2011?

Is there any other security software currently installed or anything else in the past?

Have you made any other changes to your computer recently?

Is it just automatic standby that is affected or also manual standby?

After how many minutes is your computer set to go into standby?

Check Norton Settings check Norton Schedules too.

Sometimes quick scan / full system scans happen while computer is idle.

WinXp Pro SP3 32bit

v 18.5.0.125

ZoneAlarm IS.  Did a "/clean" uninstall and manually checked for leftovers.  The same with Spybot and AdAware for which I used Revo uninstaller.  So just NIS which was a straight install from the CD.

No changes to computer.  Did a SBy/hibernate check on computer after un-installing ZASS and others and immediately before installing NIS.  It worked fine.

Manual SBy and Hibernate work fine.  Have the SBy set to 30 mins and the hibernate to 2 hrs.

The settings are "out of the box" ones.  Haven't changed anything yet.

HI billjf,

After installing NIS 2011 and running live update, did you reboot your computer and then run live update again to ensure no further updates were found? If not, please try this.

You had several security programs previously. Also it is advised to run special removal tools to remove security software rather than just uninstall them. And doing manual clean-up can be risky since it is easy to remove the wrong thing.

Here are a couple of removal tools I would recommend that you run to ensure all of your previous security software is properly and totally removed.

ZoneAlarm: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/cpes_clean.exe

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/files/remove-spybotsd-settings.reg

AdAware: I cannot find a removal tool for this one so Revo is probably OK for this one.

This is probably not causing your current problem but you should run the above tools to make sure.

After installing NIS did you run a manual FULL system scan? If not, please try this. NIS is quite aggressive at ensuring that first full scan runs to completion. This could be interfering with the hibernation.

Also double check your LAN adapter and make sure it is not set to be able to "wake the computer".

Please let us know how it looks after doing these things.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for your help AllenM.  Yes, I did all of those things you mentioned.  Have downloaded the two files you gave me the link to but I guess that its too late now to use them.  Not sure about the LAN bit.  Where & how?

Its never too Late

You can use the removal tool to get rid of

some files and registry(unneeded) still Present

Security software leave lots of files after uninstall its recommended to run the removal tool.

Hi billjf,

Please do go ahead and run the removal tools.

To check if the Network adapter is configured to wake the computer, please go to Device Manager. Find the network adapter entry and click the + sign to the left to expand the list. Double click the network device under that to bring up the device's properties. Then click the Power Management tab. Make sure there is NOT a checkmark where it says "Allow this device to wake the computer".

Do some testing to see if hibernation works as expected.

If your computer still will not go into standby we can see if NIS activities is somehow causing this. You can temporarily turn OFF the following options in Settings > Misc. Settings.

Idle Time Optimizer

Norton Community Watch

If your computer still will not go into hibernation then try temporarily turning OFF Idle Time Scans is Settings > Computer Settings.

If it still will not work it is probably not NIS causing it.

Please be sure to turn Idle Time Scans back ON when you are done testing. The other two options are not related to security and you can look at the Help Documentation to determine how you want to have them set.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.
