Norton 2006 (10.2.0.199) - I have XP with SP 3, P4 2.8ghz, 40g HD, free space is 1.7g. Norton Antivirus came with the system and I have no way of reinstalling it as a solution because the PC did not come with the disc.
Problem 1: Auto Protect can't be re-enabled.
When Windows finishes booting up, I noticed the Auto-Protect is disabled. When I try to enable it, in a couple of seconds it disables itself.
Problem 2: Live Update does not display the latest virus definition date installed.
Live Update runs to quickly to convince me it did something. A message appears and says that all is up to date. When you check the date in the Virus Definition section of Norton Anti-Virus it says 08/22/13. I don't believe that anything was updated. The last successful Live Update occurred months before this date.
Problem 3: Intelligent Updater does not display the latest virus definition date installed.
The last successful update using Intelligent Updater occurred on 08/22/13. I've downloaded the Intelligent Updater 20131119-017-v5i32 and executed the file. After 10 to 15 minutes (why so slow?) of waiting a screen appears and says if I want to continue the update. I click on 'Yes'. A message appears quickly and states that everything is up to date and to check the log file in the Temp folder called Log.IntelligentUpdater.txt. When you check the date in the Virus Definition section it says 08/22/13. It should show the date 11/19/13 as the date of the virus definition I just updated. I don't believe that anything was updated.
Problem 4: Windows Security Center can't find Norton Anti-Virus.
When I first got my PC, Windows Security Center was aware of Norton Anti-Virus. After a couple of months past, I noticed an alert in the system tray. I double click on it and the Windows Security Center popped up. It showed anti-virus software is as "Not found".
I need to know how I can fix these problems. Where can I look to see if something is broken. Do I have to edit the registry? Do I have to manipulate something in the program directory and files of Norton Anti-Virus? What should I do?
I am aware of the message that says to try the live update in 24 hours but I've had this problem for some time know.
Norton 2006 is no longer supported, which is the reason you can no longer obtain up-to-date virus definitions. A product that old is virtually useless against modern malware, which can evade most signature-based detection, anyway. The latest defenses that rely heavily on heuristics and reputation to block suspicious files before they can run were either not available, or were primitive by today's standards, in products dating back that far - to a time when rootkits were almost unheard of. Now would be a good time to ditch Norton 2006 and next May will be a good time to ditch Windows XP, which will no longer be receiving Microsoft security updates at that time. The age of your software is going to necessitate that you upgrade everything soon.

Thanks for suggesting to buy another Norton Anti-virus program version 21or 2014. But not every one can afford to spend on one item and install it as a solution. When something is updated or upgraded in that manner it will effect other things you own. Such circumstances force you to just by into a new generation of products because you can't carry them into the next OS. Besides I've had many different PC's with Norton Anti-virus versions that all eventually had the same identical problems I've posted except for the Windows XP Security Center. That is just a new problem under XP that I have.
I've listed four problems that I am sure someone knows how to fix. The trick is can it be fix without the need to reinstall Norton 2006 (10.2.0.199). As I mentioned Norton Anti-virus came with the purchase of the PC, an HP PC in fact but no CD is provided with Norton Anti-virus. Auto Protect is a setting if seen in the versions I've owned and should have a common solution across versions. The date not correctly displaying is common problem across versions when using Live Update and the intelligent Updater. The Intelligent Updater has the virus definitions packaged I don't think it needs to contact a server unless I'm wrong about that. I successfully ran the Intelligent Updater 08/22/13 so what got broken?

Thank you all for the replies so far. I know you guys are suggesting for me to buy a completely new anti-virus program. Believe me when I say I can't make an all out investment on a PC, Software that I must purchase and equipment that will only work in a new operating system. I have invested in equipment and applications that will not work in the next PC that runs the lastest OS. I would like to know what anit-virus software can be used for my XP computer that's offered for free and trusted.
