I have an older computer and a message came on saying that I have run critically low on disk space. It seems that Norton has been saving all the updated virus definitions. I thought to uninstall Norton and delete the files, but I got a message that I might lose my description and there hasn't been enough space to run a browser at the same time. I will remove some files to make more room, and follow the Norton instructions to get the removal tool etc. But my question that I can't find an answer to is how much space the Norton Utilities will need so I know how much space to free up for the download? And I am a bit curious as to why the software might be tripping up this way.
Thanks
Depending on the configuration of your computer -- version of windows etc amount of free space on your drive -- you may be well advised to use the free upgrade to the current 2011 version of Norton which is much more loight footed
To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:
What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn
If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.
If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.
Amount of free space on hard drive and size of hard drive.
Hello KatherineB
Welcome to the Norton Community Forum
Can you please give us some more information about your computer? What operating system and service pack and is it 32 or 64 bit please? If your subscription is current and your computer meets the minimum requirements, then you can update to Norton 2011 for free. What Norton product are you using and what is the version number of it please? Thanks.
Hi KatherineB:
It is probably time to update your program. It seems to me that 2008 was a bit hard on resources. You are entitled to upgrade to the newest version for free. If your machine will run 2008, it will run 2011. In 2011 you can turn on smart definitions which limits the amount of older definitions.
Let us know if you want to proceed. You will need a link to the download, a link to the Norton removal tool, and the activation key for your present product which is saved in your Mynortonaccount.com.
What product are you using; Norton Antivirus or Norton internet security, or other? What operating system and service pack level have you got? How much hard drive space?
I'll have to check these things at that computer later, as I am in a different location at the moment. I managed to get up to about 400 mb free space last night, but will move out some larger files to a portable device to make more room. One of the problems is that when I free up space Norton goes out and fills it up with another update, but I think if I move some files it will help the situation. I think it is Norton Antivirus.
Katherine,
If your keyboard has the WINKEY on -- the one down bottom left with the MS flag on it -- then pressing that and the Pause key -- up top right usually -- will tell you a lot about the system you have like the version of Windows and what Service Packs are installed plus whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit (I'm sure you aer using a 32 bit version).
With only 400MB of free space I'd say it's well beyond time for a new hard drive -- Windows 7 for example talks about 10 GB or free space minimum, not MBs ...... They are really cheap at present and are easy to replace; if you have a Windows Installation DIsk or a Recovery DIsk for the computer then it's a wonderful opportunity to clean house .....
