I went to use the scanner on my wife's computer and noticed that there was no Norton icon on the task bar. When I tried to run it from the start menu item, and hourglass flashed briefly but it will not start. I've also tried rebooting to no effect. I was able to run LiveUpdate manually, but that didn't help either.
The computer is an aging Dell 866 with XP SP2, which is used infrequently. The Norton 2008 is the 3-computer version. At one point, I allowed an automatic upgrade to run, probably for the 2009 version, but that failed and I eventually got assistance in reinstalling 2008. I have not been prompted to upgrade that system since then.
Today, when I first got to the machine, there was a Windows Update "windows has resterted" notification, for updates applied on Monday 4/19.
Poking around in some of the Symantec folders within All Users\Application Data, I found the most recent changes to be as follows:
SyKnAppS folder, signature updated 4.23.2010 at 1:09pm. (today)
SPBBC folder - latest logs 2/23/2010, 3:51pm
SRTSP folder - latest logs 2/23/2010, 3:51pm
Shared\QBackup - latest folders were 2/22/2010, 11:22pm
LiveUpdate\Downloads - latest were 4/23/2010, 1:44pm (today)
There is also an AVError.log file from today, but that's binary so I can't tell what is in it.
And if it matters, a subscription renewal hit my card a few weeks ago ;-)
Any idea what the problem is, and how I should proceed?
