Norton 2009 keeps freezing my computer, and I am getting no service from Norton

When Antivirus 2009 became available, I downloaded it, hoping to get rid of the 2008 resource hog.  Worked well for a while, then starting October 10, my Pentium III XP computer kept periodically freezing.  The CPU seemed to still be running, but any operation involving the c hard drive was locked.  Upon stopping and restarting the computer, a scandisk would usually occur, and an error message that the size of a tmp file in the SrtETmp directory was not valid.  When the computer is running, there appears to always be an apparently randomly named tmp file in this director of zero length.  It cannot be deleted.  I attempted to use Chat support but could not get through.  I sent emails to Nortons support with no response.  Finally I got through on the telephone on October 25, and the tech restarted my machine in safe mode and deleted the SrtETmp directory.  All seemed well for an hour or so, then I became aware the Nortons was not running.  Upon double clicking on the Nortons Icon, I was told that I needed to remove and reisntall Nortons.  Of course, upon reinstallation the SrtETmp directory reestablished itself.  In the past week, my computer has frozen at least once per day, and on three occasions I have been told to remove and reinstall Nortons.

HELP!  Is anyone out there having this same problem?

Can I dump 2009 (I didn't realize I was becoming a Beta "volunteer") and put 2008 back on - even though that program I consider to be a piece of )#&#(@^!!! (Okay, I'm keeping my language clean).  I used to like Nortons before 2008 - and I had hoped that 2009 would be less of a resource hog, which it does appear to be.  But daily or more freezing up my c drive is a worst nightmare than 2008.

HELP!
