hi jswaringen - very frustrating situation. i'm stuck on the idea that the removal tool fails with no error message, but before digging to deeply, have you tried uninstalling from the add/remove programs applet? if not, i'd start there and then validate that the programs you indicated were having problems were restored to normal operations. if that proves to be the case and reinstalling 360 re-introduces the problem, i'm not sure how much we can do here except raise our hands for some help.
three follow-up questions:
- did you uninstall 2007 prior to installing 360 or just install over the top?
- did you have the add-on pack installed?
- have you ever had indications of a threat on the system (odd system behavior or a notification from NIS/360 of having quarantined or blocked something?

Mel,
Yes I did try using the Add/Remove Programs option to uninstall. I did that, and ran a registry cleaner to make sure I got everything out of the registry. Then reinstalled. No luck. As far as your other questions:
- I didn't uninstall 2007 prior to installing 360.
- I never installed the add-on pack on this computer, I did on my other computer which by the way is functioning just fine.
- No indications of a threat since Installing 360. I did bout 6-8 months ago (can't remember exactly) with 2007
Thanks for the quick response.
John
Hi John,
I'm sorry to learn about the Norton program difficulties you are encountering. From reading your two posts, the thing that really stands out is the failure of the SymNRT tool. Having that fail is indicative of a potential problem with the installer service. If you can download the tool and then boot into Safe Mode to run it, we could eliminate the other suspects in terms of moving the issue forward.
If that is successful, my expectation is that we will avoid a possible over-install complication that is at the source of the other problem.
Thanks,
Matt
Thanks Matt,
I ran the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode, and it did execute properly. The problem with it might stem from the fact that I am normally not logged in as the local system administrator. My computer was built as a part of an NT Domain, which I log into via VPN since I work remotely from home. When I logged in as Administrator for the local PC that all seemed to run normally. I uninstalled everything, then reinstalled Norton 360 2.0 using the same Administrator account. Everything installed properly.
However, the problem with the multiple .exe processes not closing continues. Any further suggestions are always appreciated.
Hi John,
I think in the case of multiple processes running I'll need to get some debug logs. Here's a document with the process:
Title: 'Sending log file information to Symantec Technical Support'
Document ID: 2006071711255039
> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2006071711255039?Open&src=w
If you would enable performance monitoring as well, that would be useful. Once you have a log set, send me an email through the forums and I'll provide you with an upload location.
And thanks for helping us improve our products!
Matt
Moving to a new thread, so the replies for two different users don’t become confused.
Try turning off the phishing filter. I had a couple of hang-ups after installing Norton 360 v2, turned off the phishing filter and haven’t had a recurrence.
