Norton 360 3.0 won't launch with UAC enabled

I'm having a problem with Norton 360 v3.0 and User Account Control in Vista. With Vista UAC turned on I'm unable to launch Norton 360. I keep getting error 8504,4 "Unable to launch program" or something like that. This has happened since I installed the program. Norton appears to be running in the background and the Windows Security Center states that everything is working just fine. But I have no icon in the system tray and double clicking the Norton 360 icon on the screen does nothing.

However, once I turned Vista UAC off, Norton 360 works perfectly. I have the system tray icon and I can launch the main program window.

Here's some background info on what I have tried thus far...

-Have uninstalled Norton using the NRT numerous times, both in normal mode and safe mode

-Have re-installed with the lastest version available on the website

-Have installed with UAC off, then turned UAC back on, no changes. Still doesn't work, unless UAC is off

-Have run third party malware and anti-virus programs. Found no infections.

-Have run the NRT and the install program as an Administrator.

-I have a Vista Home Premium laptop with SP1

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I dont know the anwer you seemed to have tried most things. Nevertheless, it must be worth trying just two additional things.

1. Turn tamper protection within Norton 360 off, retry

2. de register bushell.dll, retry.

If you need further help, just ask

P.S. Maybe follow Yogesh's advice first and mine as a last resort.

Hi Flaps12,

Check this with UAC enabled in your computer- Right-click on Norton 360 icon, select Run as Administrator and provide the necessary credentials for Administrator(Windows User Account). Let me know whether you are getting the same error message.

Also, navigate to the C:\Program Files\ folder, right-click on Norton 360 folder and select Properties. On the Security tab, make sure that Full Control is given for Administrators, System and your windows log-in name under the Permissions

cgoldman-

Turning tamper protection off did not solve the problem. Unregistering bushell.dll also didn't solve the problem.

Yogesh-

Followed your instructions to run as Administrator, received the UAC box asking that it needs permission to continue, clicked Continue, and nothing happened. After a minute I get error 8504,4. Unable to run. The UAC box didn't ask for credentials. I'm listed as an Adminstrator under my user ID.

Checked the c:\program files\norton 360 folder and checked permissions. Administrators and System have full control, Users had Read,Execute permission so I gave them full control. My windows log-in name wasn't specifically listed. Didn't solve the problem.

I hate to be beaten. You say nothing happens when you click the icon. Does anything new appear in task manager?

You could download Process Explorer from Microsoft technical website, run process explorer and then run Norton and you should see a process open. Can you get that far?

Thanks cgoldman-

I hate to be beaten as well. I'm totally confused about this problem. I hate to format my hard drive and reinstall only to find out it was just a simple setting.

Anyhow, I'll try to download the Process Explorer very soon. In the meantime, I noticed something peculiar regarding processes. When I have Vista UAC enabled and can't launch Norton I have one instance of ccSvcHst.exe running under my user ID. When I have Vista UAC disabled and Norton runs perfectly, I have two instances of ccSvcHst.exe running. One under my user ID and the other is under the SYSTEM id. For some reason, the SYSTEM instance of ccSvcHst.exe is not being allowed to run when I have Vista UAC on.

Thats interesting indeed. The idea I have is to kill the PID runing Norton 360 and see if DR Watson dump reveals the point it gets to (perhaps that it cannot load the system ccsvchst). Now I know it is possible to take Norton out of service and then start it whilst in Windows. However, I only spent 6 solid months working on Vista until I conceded defeat, so I am far from an expert, and am sure others could better advise.

Fixed my problem. Unfortunately I had to format my hard drive and reinstall everything. Norton 360 v3.0 is now working great with UAC enabled. It’s not the best solution, but it worked.
