Norton 360 4.0 Premier freezes computer when running scans

Norton 360 v4 freezes up when running scans and also freezes all aspects of the computer including task master, and mouse. This started about 2 weeks ago after doing a live update. Since then I uninstalled & reinstalled Norton numerous times. (The computer does not freeze up when in use when Norton is not installed) The system is XP

Hello Nixter

If you are still on version 4.0, run live update to go to version 4.3 (this is the latest). And check whether the problem persists with the latest version also.

Hi Nixter,

since when do you have Norton on your PC? And what was your previous security / AV product, and how did you removed it?

Plus can you please tell us the exact version of your Norton product?
1. Open the main window
2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu
3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 5.0.0.125)

Thanks!

Restart the computer to safe mode, and double-click the Norton icon to start a full system scan. Check if the scan freezes the computer. If it is not working, you can try to create Norton Bootable Recovery Tool in a CD, boot from the CD and run a scan:

Thank you for your reply. I have updated to 360v5 5.0.0.125 Premier. I have rebooted in safe mode and run a complete scan and it worked fine. After rebooting in normal mode the problem persist.

I have been using Norton 360 about 3yrs. It has been updated to 360v5 Premier (5.0.0.125). I have booted up in safe mode and ran a complete scan, it worked fine. I rebooted in normal mode and the problem persist.

I have updated to 360v5 Premier (5.0.0.125) booted up in safe mode and ran a complete scan, it worked fine, no risk found. Then I rebooted in normal mode, and started a quick scan and the problem persist. It seems to freeze at the same place every time when it reaches Checking for: Bloodhound.TD.

I am sorry, but I must add that you might, perhaps,  have a malware issue. do you have Malwarebytes installed on your PC? www.malwarebytes.org. Download free version and install it, and un quick scan. If it finds something , it will either remove suspicious file or quarantine it. Then, reboot your PC, and start Norton again, see whether it has cleared the problem.

are you sre that it freezes or it takes more time to scan your PC for that particuar threat?

Anyway, did you try to clear your temporary files from your browser, and temporray files in general? You might want to read this-

When Norton comes up with bloodhound, it means it has detected a virus

Thanks for responding, I downloaded the malware as suggested and started the full scan, as it was scanning Norton started a background scan and locked up stopping the malware scan and freezing the computer including task manager, mouse  and all functions. I had to press the reset button to reboot. I then installed Norton 360, then started the malware full scan. It found 5 objects infected including 2 Trojan. I completed the removal  rebooted as instructed then reinstalled Norton 360, did all updates up to 5.0.0.125, rebooted as instructed then attempted a quick scan. It promptly locked up the computer in the same place as usual.

1) "It promptly locked up the computer in the same place as usual".So, was the problem solved?

If not, then you should have had a quick scan with malwarebytes, if there's something it will pick up. What I think you should do, is turn off internet connection.

Right click the Norton icon on your Windows application tray, which is located near the clock display on your computer.

  • 2

View the Norton 360 Control Panel that displays. You will see the Firewall enabled and Auto Protect enabled menu options checked.

  • 3

Un-check the options for the Firewall and Autoprotect to disable Norton. You will then be asked to select a time-frame for disabling the automatic protective services that ranges from 15 minutes to five hours, the next computer restart or forever. If you choose forever, you will need to manually enable Norton 360 protective services at a future time.

Exit the Norton 360 Control Panel by selecting the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Norton 360 panel. Norton 360 will now be turned off.

  • this way Norton won't interfere. Now, open Malwarebytes, and do a quick scam. If it finds something, click oon remove or quarantine, whatever command it gives, Reboot your PC, and start Norton again, see if that 's take care of problem.

    2) If you are still on the internet, another thing you can do is download Viprerescue

http://live.sunbeltsoftware.com/ , it does a deep scan, and if it finds virus while checking registry and roots, it will remove it, Watch out for a Red color on the black background.

3), are you absolutelu sure that there are bo other antivirus program installed on your PC? If you had one , are you sure you ahve completely uninstalled it? You can check Revouninstaller or CCleaner, they can remove artifacts, they are also good for removing uneded files.

    4) did you try to initiate chat with Norton via

    http://us.norton.com/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

I am afra if everything else fails, you will need to give them permisiion to remotely access your PC. They are Norton representatives, so they won't steal your information. They can work around and fiix the problem.

Where did you get that software? Maybe it is somehow incompatible with your PC. Did you have Norton standard edition and you switched to premium? Maybe you should return that software back?

Just an addition to all my instructions. I didin't understand whether the problem was resolved or not. Anyway, i remember that I has similar issue when Norton was scanning one file and froze. However, I don't remember my PC freezing.  I contacted Norton, and they told me to download some patch, which I applied, after that problem was resolved. I don't remember what patch.. I'm wondering if there are leftovers on your machine from prior antivirus products that might not have been properly cleaned off. Have you contacted chat support yet? It sounds like an corrupted installation. They can remotely assist you in removing all corrupt registry and files and reinstall N360 for you. It seems like that Norton 360 causes headache.
