Norton 360 Activating Screenshot Borders in Windows 11 After Live Update

Hello,

After running Live Update this morning and opening Firefox, I found that I was getting the yellow border around Firefox, a well known indication of screen capture. I went into my privacy and settings to see what might be causing this, and found that Norton 360 was activating the “Screenshot Borders” as shown in my first picture. When I opened the screenshot to examine it further, I found that Norton 360 was also activating a “screenshot border” around the Photos app as well. I further confirmed that this started after the March 31 update, as a laptop that had the immediately prior build of Norton 360 didn’t display this behavior until I intentionally did the update and reboot, at which point it started activating screenshot borders in Edge and Firefox

I found this alarming, and could find no clear way to determine what Norton was doing, what information it was taking, nor a clear way to disable this feature should I so choose. How can one disable this? What information is being analyzed and potentially sent to Norton when this feature is active?

Thank you for your time,

–MOS

Installed Norton 360 latest update yesterday and I am having the same issue… I hope Norton has not created its own Recall feature…

It has happened in my machines as well–three of them. The Firefox, Edge, and Chrome browsers appear with a yellow border after the Norton 360 update. The yellow border also appears on the Mozilla Thunderbird application.

I hope a resolution to this odd issue comes quickly.

@M_OS @Llun @MPhilk Can you each individually specify what version and build you are using with Windows? And the current version of your Norton install. Thanks in advance.

Two of my laptops are also getting the same issue too whenever I open chrome or edge. Both computers have all the latest Windows 11 updates and current version of Windows 11 - 2H25.My desktop, which is an older version of Windows 11 does not have this issue.

Is this a part of a Safe Web feature or just a glitch. Should I worry if Norton is recording my screen or is it like a web shield. I’d like to think it’s okay since it’s Norton doing it, but you know what?

IT’S NICE TO HAVE ANSWERS SOMETIMES

Bonjour @Primetime89

Comme vous pouvez le constater le problème est connu de Norton et les équipes travaillent dessus afin d’apporter une solution.

I’ve had the same issue since the latest Live update. Spent hours in chat and on the phone yesterday being escalated up through support tier after support tier. There was a remote session in which Norton’s 360 Deluxe was repeatedly deleted and reinstalled, settings repeatedly turned on and off, window settings changed, browsers and browser extensions installed, and logs and other info sent. Yet I still sit here without this issue being fixed. Of course they tried to play it off as it being caused by another program on my PC at one point. And every support member along the way acted like they didn’t understand why this yellow border being present was an issue.

Hello @M_OS et al
fwiw ~ my understanding:
Norton has acknowledged this issue and is working on providing a solution at the earliest.

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 Release Preview 26220.7872

Norton 26.3.10886 (build 26.3.10886.973)

I dont use Edge or Firefox. Only Chrome. Thunderbird is also showing yellow bars.

Below are my settings now to remove the yellow bars.

Another setting coming to mind is whether any of you have Co-Pilot enabled on Edge. Also if you have Narrator enabled disable it. High contrast search setting can cause the issue.

@Primetime89 What exact Windows builds are each of your devices? 25H2 build ? Build 26200.8039 is the latest, we ask to specify because Windows Updates make changes to system settings on a regular basis. Having a build that is NOT the latest can sometimes give insight as to what changed with that update.

Also when we ask for the version and build of your Norton install its for the same reasons as with Windows.

I have Safe Web enabled on Edge and Opera GX on all my personal Windows 11 devices. None are experiencing this issue. ALL are Norton version 26.3.10886 (build 26.3.10886.0), Windows 11 Home & Pro 25H2 build 26200.8039 .

Norton 26.3.10886 (build 26.3.10886.973) must have changed, since my settings were the same before and after the update. Two of my computers did the same. I hope Norton does its job of protecting computers and not starting collecting data from screenshots or I will stop using it…

Norton 26.3.10886 build 26.3.10886.973.

So far after a live update on both affected laptops this morning, the issue has stopped

Hi Primetime89, glad you reported the issue. I have exaxly the same builds which I have updated to yesterday and I have the same issue with Yellow Border around my browsers’ windows. Since yesterday, Norton hasn’t released new version so NO FIX as of now. What’s happening with these borders anyway? Is my data breached?

I dont have the borders anymore when i ran live update manually this morning.

I been checking all day and no update yet available here in UK.

@cassius99 What is your Norton version currently installed?

SA

There may not be any change to the version number for a quick fix like this. You can look at the UI Version number. That may be what gets updated for this fix.

I think I found a fix. Just go to your Norton account and remove your device. Norton 360 will say that you are not licenced so insert your serial key again. That worked for me.

Thanks Llun. Seems that worked for me as well.

I noticed that my web browser ‘blinked’ few times today and thought that it looked as if something was screenshoting it.

I have the yellow border around all my web browsers and Norton 360 listed in the Screenshot borders settings. Win11. Yellow borders appeared after yesterday’s update.

I am not particularly bothered about the border, what I would like to know is:

  • which feature is taking these screenshots,
  • where are they stored and
  • which Norton exe’c is transferring them out of my computer.

From difficult attempt of a talk with the AI (Genie) it appears that this may be linked to deepfake scams detection, however, the AI said that it would rquire the URL to be sent by the user.

The AI should be defenitely renamed. Not even trying to help. Not intelligent. Seems like from before Chat GPT era.

Oh, and “Remote management” option is turning itelf on. Looks like it was activated by default after last upate (not great Norton!) and I must have deactivated it at least three time in the last 24 hours.

Also, great to learn that thousands of files from my computer have been “scanned for scams”. Most likely my photos and my videos because this is what the AI was talking about. How are they scanning it, Norton doesn’t scan local files if it is not connected to the internet. Not great to learn that my data is being used in such way.
I don’t remember being explicitly asked if I consent to this.

Thanks.
