I have problems with printing on a HP C7280 printer with Norton 360, 1 desktop computer and x3 laptop in total all with vista.
2 of these printers can print with the HP software installed and Nortn 360, 2 can not print from the HP printer.
What could cause this problem? I have tried uninstalling and putting the HP software back on but to no avail.
Could this be a problem with setting in the Norton 360 firewall?
Do I need to enable print sharing on each computer even though the printer is wireless?
any help would be appreciated as it is driving me mad, if it is the setting in the firewall and I need to have certain things then I can check this out.
ok will try this, what else can I look at as I need to help the person out who owns all of this equipment by remote support, so if I get all avenues to look at it will save me coming back.... get it sorted hopefully in one clean sweep lol

Jay,
I'm not absolutely clear from your post whether you have four HP C7280 printers each connected to one PC or whether you have 1 printer connected to 4 PCs ....
Could you please clarify this.
If it's one printer how is it connecting to the 4 PCs?
Please specify which version of Windows including whether 32 or 64 bit each PC has installed.
Which PC (with details of Windows installed) does it work on and which does it not?
You mention the HP Software -- did you install that from the CD or check for later versions? Did you install it on each PC?
Once I have that information I should be able to help since there is some excellent directed help on the HP website and I know may way around it since I do support elsewhere on their printers ..... Not that I know much myself but I've always used HP printers and I know some people to ask <g>
The computers all connect to the HP C7280 printer via the wireless printer, on doing the setup it asks whether the computer / laptop will connect usb or wireless, so it connects wireless as the printer is wireless enabled.
All computer s run windows vista, the 2 computers that do not coonect are vista 32 bit and one is 64 bit.
I have got the guy to run the wireless HP utility and it has pointed to a firewall being the problem which I thought it was.
just to clarify all computers are wireless trying to connect to the HP C7280 wireless printer, I have tested the printer on my home wireless network running a different anti virus with no problems.
The HP software is the latest version, however when trying to uninstall on the computer that do not connect to the wireless HP C7280 it will not uninstall properly, if the computers that do not connect wirelessly are used via usb the printer works.
In my opinion it is sounding like the good old norton firewall is causing the problem, some manual configuaration needed unlike other AV software that does this with no problems!
There a bunch of very good links there in 3 categories and under setting up I see this which I have encountered elsewhere and which solved problems like you mention:
<< Sometimes the software has difficulty finding the printer over the network. If this happens, you will have a chance to do an "advanced search" for the printer using the printer's assigned IP address. You can find the IP address by printing either the Wireless Network Test Report or a Network Configuration Page. >>
From what I remember this situation may appear to be a firewall problem.
You may also want to check out Converting from a USB connection since it sounds as if you have used USB on printers now wanted to wireless connect.
Let me know how you get on. Meanwhile I'll check out some of my other sources but I suspect that the printer IP address may solve it although Vista is not the best of Windows versions .....
Did you check out the exact steps in those articles I linked to? Including printing out one or both of those screens they refer to? Where did you put the Printer IP that resulted in you getting a Google page?
You might also talk with HP support -- I just heard a first class report on this from someone whose HP Mini netbook would not work reliably even with a new N category wireless router. Turned out his particular model (within the 21 days return period they had) was end of series so they gave him a RTM with free shipping back to HP and are building one of the replacement models for him!
Not your type problem but it shows they care about their customers.
yeh I got the guy to print off a page with all the settings, nothing untoward there. printer was 192.168.2.2 I believe.
put the printer ip address into the web browser like you would with a router ip control panel.... only thing I did not do was ping the ip address of the router through cmd
The HP network utility tool said the problem was a firewall so eliminated this fully by removing Norton as a basis that if it worked without this on then something on Norton 360 was stopping it.
Norton 360 had the printer as fully trusted through the network map.
Maybe I should try ' add printer ' from the control panel on windows vista and see if that makes any difference?
Most things dont beat me but looks like I am losing this one lol
<< put the printer ip address into the web browser like you would with a router ip control panel.... only thing I did not do was ping the ip address of the router through cmd >>
I don't think you are meant to do that although I've no wireless connected experience.
I don't have VISTA active but in XP you Start Add Printer Wizard and on the second screen the second choice is Printer is on Internet or Home Network -- yours is on a Home Network so you chose that.
On the next screen the second choice is a box for address and you insert that IP address there and continue on.
It may be slightly different on VISTA but basically it should be something like that. Then carry on from there. Just at what point you need to have added or add the printer driver I don't know -- before this I would assume.
But if you go through those documents I provided the links to you should find detailed instructions either in the specific ones I indicated or in one of the ones on the first link. It's extraordinarily detailed.
Have you checked out the HP Support page on Drivers and Software recently.
Under VISTA 64 I see a number of Updates etc some of which are critical to networking and other recognition of printers and there is a very new edition of the
Network Troubleshooting Utility:
2010-09-10 , Version:4.1.0.074, 2.72M
The HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility application provides diagnostic and help information to assist users when installing and using HP printers on their home network.
Under VISTA 32 similarly and in fact some may be the same for both 32 & 64 but I would not assume it without checking the files either on the more details page or when you get the download name. It certainly seems as if the Netwrok Diagostic Utility is for 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista
Unless you have done this recently I would download these -- perhaps onto a thumbdrive -- and then install them on the difficult PC..
Yeh we used the HP network utility and it said that a firewall was the problem, totally excluded norton but that did not help so maybe it is the belkin wireless router?
Oh I did not realise that you had to put the 192.168.X.X into the add printer selection, I am sure it said you put it into the address bar in the documentation...... maybe the printer does not support this option.
The difficult thing with both the computers is, they both struggle taking off the old drivers & software as I wanted to install fresh drivers & software on elimination basis.
I'm pretty well at the end of suggestions since I'm not sitting at the system -- not quite sure why the guy you say is working on it doesn't know enough to fix it!!!! ?
On the PC that does not print --
Turn off the printer
Go to the Printers screen where you can add a printer -- as I say I'm not in VISTA but in XP you can access it via Control Panel or START / Settings / Printers & Faxes
Right mouse click on the Printer icon(s) for that printer -- I presume it is the only one that is part of the system, apart from any funny things Windows sometimes puts in like Microsoft XPS document or a Quicken print to PDF if you have Quicken installed on the PC -- and select Delete
Reboot the PC
I would suggest that you download the latest driver / Full set software for that printer and that version of Windows Follow the instructions on the HP website to install that driver
You have said you ran the Network Utility -- was it the very recent version I pointed you to?
Have you installed the several Updates on the HP Website for your printer and VISTA version? There are three there all concerned with dealing with networking problems, IIRC.......
Not being there I'm working in the dark but I get the impression that your guy is not using the information that is on the HP Website in its totality -- not just the Network Utility (did you see in the instructions that you are not to close it down when you go to fix things manually if that is necessary?
The guy at the other end is a end user and not a computer it chap so that is why he can not fix it, I know more then him and still struggle with this.
A basic uninstall and trying to install fails on one of the machines, the other goes through installation, finds the printer (wireless) and says everything has been sucessful?
Obviously not as it can not print, seems funny how to can not print but the other 2 can, strangely enough the wireless printer works on my home network with a linksys cisco router, the only difference I noticed is that on printing out the network settings sheet it has allocated the printer ip on my network as 192.168.2.102 where as on the other guys network it has put it as 192.168.2.2? unsure if this makes a difference.
I think the best action now is this;
add the printer as new hardware that way... then delete the existing printer in the printers through control panel... the other laptop that will not even uninstall the HP software for the printer is to either try and remove it in safe mode or do a system restore but I know this does not always work.
and just to clarify all of the printers have the latest drivers / software except one that will not uninstall and gets stuck at 50%
OK -- I thought it was your office set up and an IT guy working on it for you ...
<< add the printer as new hardware that way... then delete the existing printer in the printers through control panel... >>
My advice would be to remove the printer whereever it shows up on that PC; reboot; see if you can uninstall anything in Remove Programs that is HP related and start all over again.
Have the HP software on tap; printer turned off; then Add Printer which brings up the Wizard and when you get that screen I mentioned earlier insert the Printer IP in the box and work on from there.
If you download the HP Printer Full Package, saving it, from what I read on those last HP pages if you run the HP software -- Right mouse click on the downloaded and saved file and select Run as Administrator since you are using VISTA -- it should expand the contents of the file into a folder it creates on your hard drive and then commence the installation routine.
That's what it says and why I suggest Deleting before trying to install anything; Run as Administrator is known to solve some installation problems with VISTA and Windows 7.
Another tool in dealing with uninstall problems is to boot up to boot mode which reduces the chance that the failure to uninstall is due to the file being in use and then run the Uninstall Programs.
Also I've lost track of where you are with some things.
You said that uninstalling Norton did not stop the firewall message -- is "Norton" (Norton 360?) now reinstalled or not?
If it is reinstalled have you disabled AutoProtect which protects system files from change.
Which version of Windows VISTA -- 32 or 64? -- is on the PC that still won't print?
Have you printed out the step by step HP troubleshooting guide on Wireless Connections that I linked to and carried it out exactly as it says "Without skipping anything and in the order set out" ? What about some of the questions like whether the wireless light is ON or not?
You said that the software was all the latest -- hae you subsequently applied those fixes for Networking problems in the Download section for the C7280 ?
Could you go through the questions here and in earlier messages and give me the answers in one single message -- then I stand a chance of seeing where you are at.
could you post up the link for the fixes again so I can make sure I did all these.
the two computers that dont print are vista 32 bit and a 64 bit one.
I will also get the guy to use the print diagnostic tool as did not see that one, tried the network utility tool that pointed to the firewall.
How do you get to Auto protect ..... sorry I do not use Norton so not so clued up on it.
Yes worth trying safe mode boot

Please show me what page these are on thanks.
Norton is now back on, we know the printer is not faulty, wireless symbol is on + radio etc and two computers can print so somewhere settings have gone haywire.
