Issue abstract: LiveUpdate not working with ProtonVPN
Detailed description: I have been using both Norton 360 and ProtonVPN for months, even years. Never had issues. However, since two days I have an issue with LiveUpdate not working properly, when ProtonVPN is on. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete and sometimes it just does not complete at all. If I turn of ProtonVPN the issue is gone instantly.
I tried using different protocols (Smart, Wireguard, OpenVPN, Stealth), tried to disable Netshield, tried to disable VPNaccelerator), tried different servers and even countries. Nothing seems to fix it.
I love ProtonVPN and I love Norton 360 and really do not want too quit on any of it, but this is driving me crazy. ProtonVPN points at Norton and Norton customer service did not get any further then “let me have a look at your pc”.
I tried this on my desktop, with a fresh install, but the issue is also there on my wifes laptop, with a full old installation. Same issue. Also, I tried to reinstall Norton 360, while ProtonVPN was active and the installation also was crawling, so there is some issue with Norton 360 connection to the update servers over ProtonVPN connections it seems.
Software updater also not working, so anything that needs to contact Norton servers seems broken, so I wonder what else is broken under the hood. This is not good, and as a 20+ year customer the support was really not helpful.
Are you using one of your VPN’s when using Software Updater? Norton websites is one of the many companies that will not play well with a VPN. This is to help protect their geolocked products. It will even block its own VPN product from accessing some of its sites.
So try your Software Updater again without a VPN.

So anything that needs to use the Norton servers is not working when I am connected to ProtonVPN.
This was never an issue, I have been using both products side by side for over a year, so something changed. I wouldn’t mind if it was just the Software Updater, but if LiveUpdate is not working then the product becomes totally useless.
It would be nice if they would just say “we know and we are on it” instead of just repeating standard replies at customer support or try to remote desktop to solve something that is clearly not solveable by a few settings.
If this setup has been working in the past, it is possible that Norton has tightened up or updated its list of known VPN IP addresses that it will block as I noted above. I’ll see if I can get some clarification on this.
I find it weird still. Their own VPN is allowed, but they are blocking one of the most popular VPN now? That really would be a deal breaker for me. I would hate to leave Norton after so many years, since I like and trust their products. I would understand if it was for some of their products so you can not avoid regional locks, but for LiveUpdate? Not acceptable in my opinion.
