Norton 360 Auto Virus Scan

I make this suggestion as I can see the problem too. Set your task scheduler to weekly and select a suitable day of the week and time.

Turm off "only run at idle time".

See what results you get with this setting and advise.

I tried that last Sunday it didn't work both Virus/Spyware scan nothing & PC Tuneup didn't run either. But your idea may still work for other users.

Would u believe, I can reproduce your problem on one of my m/c’s. and now I cannot get the scan/tuneup to work either. Check back from time to time because I am being assisted by Norton and I’m sure this will take a little longer than the zombie problem to resolve.

As I said before in the other thread, imo, this scan problem came after 2.3.1.4 update! Least I didn’t see it before while checking scan results a few times a day. And btw I’ve noticed, that N360 hasn’t done automatic full scans at all witch it did least once a day before update.

I have found that when 360 does it’s 1 or 2 second Auto Virus Scan and scans zero files, it coincides with an Auto Backup which occurs at precisely the same time. The backup is successful but the virus scan is not.

In my case I have backup scheduled to weekly and on a day and time different to that set for scan/tuneup. Nevertheless, no scan has taken place since 17th, despite me setting for a weekly scan hour on hour. i.e. I select 18th July at 03:00, nothing happens and at 03:30 I set it to 04:00, nothing happens and at 04:00, I set it to 05:00. In fact I can get the scan to work, except manually.

Hi All,

It looks like we have a few different issue elements that have been identified. Here's my read on them individually:

  1. Manual scans all work
  2. Idle time scan log indicates that it ran but for an exceedingly short duration and no files were scanned
  3. When changing from idle time scan to scheduled scan, the scheduled scan does not run
  4. High CPU utilization noted by Clive on scanstub despite a completed "zero scanned" log report

If I missed something, please let me know.

I checked my own idle time scan (on three separate XPSP2 boxes) and they had run successfully. They are all at 2.3.1.4, so I don't think we can necessarily ascribe it to that update. I did notice, however, that on all three boxes the last virus and spyware scan was on the 17th, which coincides with Clive's observation. That doesn't account for Rob's July 5th post in the other thread that he had observed it over the previous week.

For right now, I think we should confirm that the startup services are set properly (an update could have made an inadvertent change) - step three in this document will ensure they are set properly.

Finally, can folks check their virus def dates and see if they are updating and let me know?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks,

Matt

Today is 20th July 2008. I am in London.

This morning my scan details showed that a scan took place at 02:17 , the scan was 1sec and no files scanned  i.e. everything in the scan details werer zero/0.

It appears to me that liveupdates are checked about every hour but not on the hour.

For example logs show that liveupdate was terminated at 12 mins past midnight, then 1:16 and then 2:12 . After that 3:18 and 4:21

None of these checks for liveupdate resulted in an actual update to virus definitions. I know this because this morning the "about" was still reporting Protection Updates as 19th July 2008.

Why then was a short scan taking place just five minutes are a liveupdate? I do not know. We know that a scan takes place after ever liveupdate but then the scan details were not updated for example after the 3:18 or 4:21 liveupdate checks.

Not sure Matt how you checked idle time scan  Does idle time scan update scan details?

To answer your direct question, live update worked on 19th July and again today 20th July. I believe the update today took place because I unintentionally ran "check for updates." I cannot say whether the update to defs would have occured at the next automatic background liveupdate had I not run "check for updates".

P.S.

It is now Monday 21st July.

Its 1:08 in the morning. I just forced another liveupdate check. Another update was downloaded apparently but my about is still showing 20th as the latest protection. I therefore wonder if it is possible that sometime liveupdate downloads certain information as part of liveupdate which is not a full flow virus definition update (e.g. a component update) and accordingly this is sufficient to trigger a scan but the scan is zero because then the system sees no change to the definition files.

Hi Clive,

Let's try something - this document has the PIUpdate tool in it, which will correct problems with the inventory file. Run that, then run LUALL. Wait for a day and let's see if that corrects it.

Let me know,

Matt

DerekJJ do you have both "PC Security & Tuneup" and backup set to "automatic"? What are your "idle time" settings against each?

Done. I used PIupdate, and the document to run luall. It downloaded some file update.

I then ran luall for good measure. Minutes later I saw a popup box at the bottom right I think "Background Activity scans in progress" and a minute of so later "Background Activity scan completed". However,a backup was done at 00:16 and it is now 0:55.Scan details shows that a scan took place at 00:55. All very strange between my schedule is PC Security & Tuneups Thursday 22:00 i.e. a time not yet reached and for Backup Friday 11:00 tomorrow (today is Thursday morning) so no other backup should be taking place.

I tried on a 2nd machine that has been left idle since 09:00 yesterday. The last scan details is 22nd July at 13:03 The update has not resulted in any scan or backup. Its now 24th Jul 07:48 and still scan details says 22nd July. The autofix tool (part of your document) said download complete but nothing else. So I had to force LUALL. NO files downloaded and no subsequent backup or scan.

When I came to the computer this morning (07:00) it said also "Background activity scans complete". No scan details updated, but Backup was done at 24th July 04:15 - again to be clear my backup schedule  is set for weekly  at 11:00 on Friday's. So why a backup has taken place is very strange.

I was able to reproduce the problem (zero files scanned) on a test box a few days ago (Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 2.3.1.4). The logs are being analyzed now, but I'm anxious to learn whether this is still a problem for anyone else.

Please post here if you have seen or can reproduce this problem.

Many thanks,

Matt

I have this problem daily. It occurs just after 1100 GMT and scans no files. This happens even if I have done a manual 'Quick Scan' previously.

I am using Vista Home Premium SP1 and 360 Version 2.3.1.4

I have exactly the same as DerekJJ. Also Vista SP1 and ver. 2.3.1.4.

From the main screen, move mouse over PC Security and then click view details. Under |Virus and Spyware scan, click more info.

What does it say?

I think you need to check if in fact your PC is truly idle. Initiate Windows Task Manager or Procexp (Microsoft).Sort on CPU and is System Idle Process always at 99 and no other CPU usage?
