Norton 360 back up failure to an external hard drive

I am using Norton 360 v5.1 to back up my PC to an external hard drive. I get an error message "There is a back up problem. Make sure the destination drive is connected then try again."

 

I am running Windows XP Home edition.

The destination drive is connected and I can see it and copy files to it using MS Explorer.

The destination drive has plenty of available space.

 

Why will Norton 360 not complete a back up?
