How can I tell what version?

No virtual drives.

Thanks.

To determine which version of N360 you are running:

Open the main N360 window.

Look in the top right corner:

In v1 you will see "Support" and "Help" as separate links. Click on "Support" and then click on "About Norton 360."

In v2 you will see "Help and Support" as a single link. Click on that and then click on "About N360" from the dropdown menu.

When trying to use Norton 360 Backup on Windows XP SP3, the following error message is immediately displayed:

Results

The disk drive maybe busy or unavailable.  Make sure to close any running programs and try again.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how to get backup working?

Thanks.

Its version 2.3.1.4

So now any other ideas?

Thanks.

Internal or external drive?

Duh.  Trying to backup to a CD (that is in the desktop tower).  Guess I should have denoted that in original message.

Hello stratolynne.

Do you run any kind of drive emulation software?

Such as Daemon tools?

I have never seen that particular problem with a cd\dvd drive before.

Dave

No drive emulation software that I am aware.  Any ideas how to check and see what is "owning" the CD drive so Norton 360 Backup can't get to it?  Any tests I can test to narrow it down?

Hello stratolynne.

You can try disabling windows built-in burning capabilities.

This has been known to give 'drive in use' errors.

To disable it, do this:

1. Double click to open My Computer icon on desktop.

2.  Right click  cd/dvd drive and select Properties.

3. Click the Recording tab.

4. Uncheck 'Automatically eject cd after writing' and 'Enable cd recording'.

5. Apply and Ok.

6. Reboot/Restart the computer.

7. Try to backup to cd again.

Let us know how it goes.

Dave

Tried the prescribed steps this afternoon.  No luck.

I also tried stopping iTunes.  Thinking that some other application is "owning" the CD.  No luck.

Then I tried to go into Safe Mode and run Norton 360.  But it doesn't work.

Any other ideas?

Sorry stratolynne.

Without knowing exactly what you have installed on your system, there isnt much more that I can suggest.

Can you make a list, or provide screenshots, of your (Add/Remove programs list in XP) (Programs and Features).

I do know that Creative Audigy (sound card) has/had an application that accesses/uses the cd/dvd drive (I cant remember what the name is, and I cant find it on google).

Also, Nero (older Nero) had a service for the cd also (again, cant remember the name).

Also, run through the list of services to see if there are any cd/dvd specific services listed (you can also provide screen shot or list of current services).

You can access the services screen this way:

1. Click Start (or windows icon on Vista), then Run.

2. Type in 'services.msc' (without quotes), and click OK.

Dave

Hello stratolynne.

The Nero app I was talking about before is called In-CD.

That could also potentially cause issues.

I haven't had a chance to get the information about what is running on this pc yet.

But I have another thought - could I run the Norton 360 Backup and have the device I write to a USB flash drive instead (like a 2 or 4 GB)?

Hello stratolynne.

Yes, you can backup to a usb flash drive, as long as there is enough free space on the flash drive.

Dave

Hi,

Are you using Norton 360 V1 or V2? If V1, try upgrading to V2. You can download the trial from the Symantec website and install it over the top of V1.

And are you trying to backup a virtual drive?

Norton 360 backed up my PC at 2:11 PM.  Shortly after that, I had a problem with an .odt file that caused me to want to retrieve its previous version from the 2:11 PM backup.

When I looked for the file in Norton backup, it was missing, (so far as I could tell).  Before the problem...pre 2:11 PM, and since 04/23, the odt file had a funny file name ... probably because I retrieved it on April 23rd from Norton backup.  It was something like (filename)@2013-04-17T19;42;23.odt...after being retrieved from backup...whereas it was (filename).odt before I retrieved it from backup.

I hope the newer verion of the file was backed up at 2:11 PM even though I don't see it now on the default backup.  I am sweating that outcome, to be honest.

Then, as I was searching backup to restore files (specifically, a (filename)@2013...file, I got an error message as follows:

Norton 360
6.4.1.14
Error: 8504, 104
Windows 7 Home Premium
7601.18113.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.130318-1533
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

Fixing that error, whatever it might be, will be a complicated task and I have no idea that fixing it will solve my file restore problem.  It might, or it might not; Norton give meno clue as to what the error(s) entail.

So I have three questions:

1.  If Norton backed up my PC at 2:11 PM (including the file I was working on, and had saved repeatedly earlier today), why was that file not available to be restored?

2.  Could it be "out there" even if I can't find it by searching to restore?

3.  What bearing does Error: 8504, 104 have on my oddball backup problem?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
