Norton 360 cloud backup space management

We are a small non-profit with 30 desktops and laptops using a mix of Windows XP and 7 OS on 32 & 64 bit machines.  No servers involved but networked.  Located over 3 physical locations at least a mile apart.

Backup to the cloud via Norton 360 is set up in all cases.  This has been in existence for about 3 years.

Each computer has been registered with Norton using the same username and password so they all share the same account.

We have a total backup capacity of 40 GB according to Norton but we are running out of space and get prompts to increase storage.  I discovered the storage capacity for each installation is placed into a common total number of GB rather than allocating a given amount of GB to each computer.

I understand I need to go into each computer’s Norton setup and hand tailor the files to be backed up instead of accepting the default….that would save us some room.

THERE IS A QUESTION:

Has anyone done the footwork and figured out the easiest way to manage a situation similar to ours?

I am a single volunteer IT person and have plenty else to tackle without spending hours figuring this out.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Ramsey

There really is no easy solution in this scenario. You're using a consumer based product designed more for the home user in an enterprise level way. Norton 360's online backup space will span among the various systems you have that same account established under but there is no way to preload any settings beyond what the client interface and/or wizard permits.

There is Norton Online Backup as well. That does permit configuration via the web, custom rules and wizard setup, but it has a restriction of 5 PC's per account. There are no immediate plans to change those settings so you'd stil need multiple accounts and would be back in the same boat.

Wes,

I would hope that Norton has a friendly route for user needing to change from Consumer-based products to Enterprise based?

With that number of seats it would seem to be advantageous all round.

Thank you for your response as a Norton Representative.

Copies of Norton were obtained via TechSoup.com which is an organization serving the non-profit community.  Norton provides the software at basically a donation price.

We are backing up around 20 computers using the Online Backup function.  I don't see any restrictions to 5 PC's per the one login account I have established.  All machines are indicating files are backed up.  We currently have 60GB of storage.  The only error messages we get are when we approach the upper limit of available space.

I am able to hand taylor individual files to be backed up depending on the needs of the individual.

I don't understand why we are not seeing any restrictions?

Thank you,

Rammer,

PMJI but the reference to Norton OnLine Backup in that message is to a separate program from Norton 360 which includes online backup .... are we confused yet? <g>

See:  http://us.norton.com/online-backup/

That does say limited to 5 PCs and refers to 25GB expandable.

Hope that helps

Can Techsoup provide the Enterprise versions that Wesley referred to?

www.techsoup.com does not offer Norton Online Backup as a donated product.  They do offer Backup Exec 2012 [which I use at home] but the price per seat is too much for this organization.

Thank you all for your input.  I will continue to search for an alternative solution.
