Norton 360 cut internet speed in half

When Norton is installed, internet speed is cut (see lower speeds in the picture) When Norton is uninstalled speed is restored to normal. I have stopped the firewall to no avail.

are you running Norton 360 VPN?

I was and turned it off. No change. The only way to get the speed back is to remove Norton and it hidden stuff

Hello @George_Creamer

fwiw ~ my boiler plate

Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine

If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

Download and run the Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here

Maybe, try Troubleshooting → Record a performance issue &or Enable/Send debug logs

I did that several times on 3 PCs . The only thing that worked was removing Norton

We’re curious - what did Norton support do/say?

Norton 360 version number:
OS details:

All: The Norton VPN “service” will start regardless of what its set to in your Norton settings. My personal laptop has the latest version release as of yesterday and I have validated that. That being said it doesn’t affect my upload/download speeds. One thing the OP may do is ensure the VPN is disabled in Norton settings, and settings its service to start “manually”, save, reboot and recheck.

I was experiencing the same issue/bug. From ~940Mb up/down service, down to ~710Mb/940Mb. Upload doesn’t seem to be affected. After months with the issue and uninstalling Norton to fix it, tried again with Norton’s most recent version but the bug was still there.

My network card has Realtek drivers. Tried the Realtek’s (NDIS) version of the driver and it started working correctly. The (NetAdapterCx) driver version is the one that cuts the download speed, together with Norton installed. If you uninstall Norton, the card with (NetAdapterCx) drivers works correctly. Not sure if the problem is with Norton, Realtek or Microsoft’s Windows (NetAdapterCx) but they need to troubleshoot this issue.

Test at 7:26 PM is (NetAdapterCx) and 7:39 PM (on top of the image) is with (NDIS).

Hope this helps! Greetings!

Hello @sofwrdude

In order to try to resolve your slow connection difficulties, I propose some resolution tracks proposed by the integrated search of Norton support.

The pages below have different steps to follow:

Norton Support - VPN slow connection

Fix problem accessing the Internet when connected to Norton VPN

Sorry @Gribouille342 , No VPN is active in this scenario. No real solution within the “Norton Support - VPN”. Disabling the VPN doesn’t fix anything. In fact, disabling all Norton firewall, VPN, Antivirus or all settings didn’t solved the problem.

I wrote the scenario, test case, and solution above!

Greetings!

@sofwrdude Je vous remercie pour votre retour. Je suis désolée que votre problème persiste. D’après votre message ci-dessus, j’en conclus que le support Norton ne vous a pas proposer de solution.

Hi, @George_Creamer ,

This fix worked for me! Try it, if you are using a Realtek driver’s card. You can verify in “Device Manager>Network adapters” for the driver’s developer. Realtek’s website has the drivers with the NDIS version that works correctly with Norton. If you see a (NetAdapterCx) version, just download a previous one that doesn’t have that description.

In realtek website go to “Downloads > Communications Network ICs” and then choose the “Family Controller Software” for your port/card type; USB, PCIe, 1GbE, 2.5GbE, etc.
