It's been going on for 5 hours and twenty minutes now, and I swear it hasn't always taken this long. Help, as I will have to turn it off before I go to sleep, and I don't want to have to do it all over again tomorrow.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop.
Total 283 GB in size, and free space - 150 GB.
Is there anything else you would need to know to help?
Katie.

Welcome Katie,
You can interrupt the process without creating any problems. If you start it again soon it will pickup about where it left off and continue.
How long has it been since you did an optimization?

Well if I'm being honest right now... never. I've had this laptop about two - three years now, and I've had Norton on it before. I'm not a huge computer person, but I'm good with most things. Although I know how to fix some problems, I'm most into design etc, so security and running of a computer is not something I know a lot about.
My Mum has Norton too and sometimes that does disk optimization on hers too, but doesn't take as long, but her laptop is different and probably has less stuff on than mine.
This is the first time Norton has asked me to do a disk optimization and if I had known that I needed to do it often, I would have, but unfortunately I don't know much about it.
Norton has been on this laptop for the duration I've had it and this is the first time it's done one, or asked to do one.
I had to turn off my laptop after 7 hours of it going through, and it still hadn't finished.
Hi,
No harm, no foul. You've done nothing to harm your system. You should set soe time aside to do a bit of maintenance on your system. It will help it to run more efficiently.
Reboot your computer and take the time to let it finish the optimization. 360 isn't going to be happy until that's done. When it's finished we can discuss an ongoing maintenance plan so that you don't have this problem again.

Elapsed time, so far, is 16 hours and 53 minutes on a 500g hd. No indication of stopping/finishing anytime soon. Is there a progress bar or some reference to say how far along this is? Simply allowing it to continue indefinitely is not an option. Is there something to indicate it is actually working and not just hung up or frozen? !7 hours is entirely too long for this process.
Should add that I'm running Vista, dual core AMD 5600processor @ 2.8g with 4g ram. I've got a 500g hd w193 of free space. Norton 360 did not suggest disk optimization. Keeps tellin'me I'm @ zero%, but I've recently added and deleted some stuff, moved stuff around, basically routine huosekeeping. Usually use the windows tool for defrag. Thought I'd try the Norton.
