Hi,
I spend 2 hours with a tech support going thru my computer and the resulting answer was that I am unable to restore my N360 files from both on line storage and a flashdrive because I don't know what my computer nickname was on my computer before it crashed. To be honest, I'm not sure I gave it a nickname. But if I did, I have no idea what it was. There must be someway to bypass this. The online storage shows it is almost full and the support tech could see my backup on my flashdrive but couldn't get it to restore. I'm very frustrated. I have lost everything under this idea of secure backup provided by Norton. I wish I had done it the old fashion way by copying to disks. Can anything be done? I can tell I'm not the first person this has happened to, but am not seeing any clear answers to work around the "nickname" problem.

Hi Scooperb,
There is no need that you have to give a nickename for restore. Only information you need is your Norton Account. When you restore from Online Storage, you have to select Nickename of your computer that is already listed there. Your problem comes similar to the information provided in this Symantec Support Article. If possible, try those instructions.
I am sure that you may have tried uninstall using Norton removal tool and reinstalled Norton 360. But, have you tried to run the BUdump tool for backing up the settings of "Backup & Restore" before running the removal tool?

Hi Yogesh,
the problem is that I can't see the Nickname of the computer file listed on the online storage. I can't see any of that. And I can't restore anything from my flash drive either. The Norton tech spent two hours on it and gave up saying I was out of luck unless I could remember my nickname. I keep thinking there must be another way.

Have you tried using BUdump.exe tool , uninstalled Norton 360 using the removal tool and reinstalled it? I have asked about this same BUdump.exe tool in my earlier post.
Hi,
I have not heard of this software - BUdump.exe tool. what is it?
I did uninstall and reinstall the 360 with no luck.

Realizing now that I have Norton Version 1. Not 2. Does that make a difference?

That doesn't make much difference. I would suggest you to run Budump tool, then run Norton removal tool. Budump.exe backs up your Norton 360 Secure Online Storage backup settings, and restores it when you reinstall Norton 360. Budump.exe runs quickly and silently. For instructions, refer to this Symantec Support Article.
After that, install Norton 360 2.0 upgrade which is available free for you. You can use the Trialware link to download and install the Norton 360 2.0 version in your computer. After installing the Norton product, you need to activate the Norton product using your product key. Then check the problem with restore and backup.
Yes. I did the Budump, uninstalled my Norton, reinstalled it and now it doesn’t recognize that I have almost 2 gig online. Before it would recognize it, but not let me restore from it. Bigger problem than the online storage is my flashdrive with the more important data. I didn’t feel comfortable trusting my data to the online storage (that was my daughters pics). So I used Norton’s “secure backup” system to put those files on a flashdrive. So there I was every week feeling like I was a responsible computer user - backing up all my files. I’m so secure. I’m so safe. What a bunch of bunk. All I have on that thumbdrive is a bunch of scrambled eggs that can’t even be decoded by the highest level of Norton support. If you can’t back up to a new computer or a reformatted hd after a huge crash, what is the point? It doesn’t work and it played me like a monkey every week. Your computer is in danger, backup! Heck. That backup and $4 might get me a coffee at Starbucks. I recommend that people not use the Norton backup. It is not reliable. Fortunately, I ran a separate backup from the Quicken app and I had it installed and ready to go in less than 4 minutes. Norton could learn from the Quicken follks. Now that is what I call backup. Thanks for your input. I’m really no worse off. Now I’ll have to explain to my daughter that my fancy program lost all her documents, music and pics.I’m going to resume life now sans my important data. scb
It's a MIRACLE. You are a genius. I went home last night and redid all steps, Udump, uninstall, installed V2 and suddenly it recognized my flashdrive. I restored everything from it. This is a great mystery since I've never owned V2. Unfortunately, my online storage is still lost (stills says I have zero when I know I had almost filled it), however at least that was only my daughter's pics. I can live without it and I've sent support a note to see if they can find it since now I have THE FIX.
I can't thank you enough!

Hi Scooperb,
It's good to know that you are able to restore from flashdrive, atleast one part of your problem got resolved.
By backingup the settings of your Backup using BUDUMP tool, Norton 360 2.0 was able to restore those settings and that helped it to recognize the files from flashdrive. Most of the similar backup problems used to get resolved by this BuDump tool.
