Norton 360 Icon and Menu not working in Win8

Hi,

I have a laptop with Win7 using at work and bought a new laptop with Win8 recently.

There was Norton Internet Security software (30-day use) on the new laptop.

After 30 days, I bought Norton 360 (3 licences) and installed on both Win7 (work laptop) and Win8 (new laptop)

Norton 360 on Win7 is working well, however, about a week or so after I installed on Win8 some of the programs did not work properly, such as Mozilla Thunderbird email software could not connect to server, etc.

I checked and understood that it was because of firewall setting of Norton and tried to find firewall setting but couldnt.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton 360 by using NRnR which was recommended in Norton support page but now I have the icon on the desktop however, it doesnt work. Also Norton 360 main menu doesnt open or come up, therefore  I cannot scan, etc. I suspect I could not install Norton 360 properly and probably it is not running.

Appreciate if you can help.

Thanks

John

Dear Dist/Ed2,

Thank you for your help.

I wish I could say `solved` but I`m afraid the icon still doesnt work.

What I did is:

1. Downloaded the norton 360 file from the link you gave, run it.

2. When I tried to run, it asked me how to un-install existing Norton: I want to keep the main settings or remove all.

3. I chose `remove all` and uninstalled whatever I had on my computer.

4. After uninstall, it installed Norton 360 and at the end of the install it did not ask me any license or serial number, etc. Only a message appeared : "You are now protected' and an arrow saying ``follow`` or something.

When I clicked on the new Norton 360 icon on the desktop, result the same. Nothing happens, nothing opens, also cannot see Norton icon on the right bottom menu (on windows7 laptop I can see)

It said I`m protected but I really doubt so as I cannot open Norton.

Or is there another way in Wondows 8 that I can cofirm whether installed or not?

And how can I open the main menu, do scanning, etc like I cn do on my other laptop with Win7?

Appreciate if you can advise

Thanks

It sounds like you got a successful installation, but that the icon on your desktop is pointing to something else that's no longer there. Remember, this is just a shortcut, not the program itself--so upgrades or reinstallations of the software that move key files they point to or change execution parameters can cause the shortcut to stop functioning. This happens to me all the time with iTunes, for example.

So try going to your Windows 8 Start Screen, right-click in empty space on the margins somewhere, and click the link to see "all programs." look through the list it brings up until you see the Norton icon there (this will actually point to your current installation) and click to run it.

If this works, and the Norton 360 main screen says you're all protected, then you're in business. Once you can see the Norton 360 main screen, you can run all the scans, etc., that you mention just like you're used to. Delete the old shortcut from your desktop and create a new one.  If it doesn't, let us know and we'll take it from there.

P.S. If you hover your mouse cursor over the little icons in your right bottom menu, one of them will invite you to see icons not displayed. Click it, and if your Norton is in fact working, you should see its icon in the list that pops up.

This issue has ocurred with me.  I've tried to get help from Norton support but they have failed to provide any solutions.  It's a Windows 8 thing - and I'm guessing Windows 8.1.  The fact that you have the same symptoms as me but the forum support people do not recognise it makes my heart sink - this means the issue is not being addressed.

Just to be clear: the symptoms are that the shortcut will not work.  Clicking on the .exe directly will also fail.  In the bottom right hand corner of the desktop (in desktop mode) there should be a selection of icons (the system tray.)  There should be a Norton icon there, but if you have the same symptoms as me this icon will not be visible.  If you leave it running for several minutes after clicking the shortcut link an error message will appear where Norton wil try to autofix the problem, and fail.  Your vault will not open, though the Norton taskbar will be visible.

Workaround - it always fails on first boot.  Reboot your computer and you should find that the Norton program now works, the system tray icon appears again and the vault works.  I've not been able to find the source of the problem but my guess is that Norton 360 doesn't like Windows 8, particularly 8.1.

Maybe the forum support team will start to take the problem seriously.

There was definitely an issue with Windows 8.1, which took the Norton folks a while to resolve. I actually held off on the upgrade myself while they went round and round with Microsoft, but it's now working just fine.

If this is indeed a lingering issue that what's been done so far did not fix, it's good that you've raised it here, as it may be the first indication that the fix didn't take care of quite everything. Hopefully the original poster will confirm the same symptoms (or report that everything's fine now) so Norton can tell whether there's a lingering problem or whether you may have something unique to your configuration.

If anyone else is also experiencing what DanielP reports, please let us know here as well, as this would also tend to confirm a  wider problem.

Thanks,

Just a random thought:
@ TRW2006, what is the make of your new system - there has been past situations with Lenovo.

@ DanielP, what version of N360 are running and are you still on Win 8? Also you mentioned that a reboot will enable Norton to work. I am not on Win 8, but as I understand there is a difference between in how or what a reboot/restart accomplishes.

@ All, Have you both in fact run LiveUpdate (rebooting when requested) until LiveUpdate responds “no updates found”?

I'm running Windows 8.1.  I don't know the technical details of the difference between a reset and a reboot, but it definitely makes a difference with Norton 360.  Starting from cold Norton 360 fails, but from 'warm' it works properly.

I've run LIveupdate, reinstalled Norton 360, reinstalled Windows (from 8 to 8.1), shut down startup programs, uninstalled antispyware programs, and jumped through more hoops than I can remember.  Nothing works.

The big problem with Windows 8 and 8.1 is that Microsoft has a new system - you don't log into your operating system so much as you log into Windows online services now.  One feature that may be relevant is that my system is set to automatically key in my password - a non-default option I set myself as Windows 8 by default requires a password keyed in manually.  Or it may be that Microsoft doesn't play nice with Norton.

Logging out and logging in is not the same as a reset - only resetting the computer solves it.

I have no idea what causes it, but it is the only software on my machine that fails.  My desktop is well looked after and very reliable otherwise.

Thanks for comments and guidance.

I feel I`m getting closer to solution but still seems not satisfactory.

Somehow symptoms similar to what DanielIP mentioned.

Firstly, I checked Windows version

I typed `systeminfo` on the command line and result is as below:

Lenovo-PC

Microsoft Windows 8

6.2.9200 Build 9200

Next, I right clicked on the mouse in the main menu and checked the program files.

I saw Norton 360 icon.

However, when I click on it, the screen immediately turns to desktop screen and nothing happens.

As before, Norton main menu also doesnt appear

There is one more icon, `Norton Studio`

When I click that one, a menu appears but different from Norton 360 main menu

It has buttons to connect to Family stuff, etc in the internet.

This Win8-Norton 360 relationship will drive me crazy....

So, above is my current situation

Appreciate if you can advise further.

Wish you a happy new year.

@ Trw2006,

It's been awhile since I have runinto a situation with a Lenovo, but there was a Rapid Start or Rapid Boot (or something similar) that was part of the standard factory installed programs that caused Norton not to open.  I beleive the Rapid Boot is no longer available.  However it appears Rapid Start is still part of Win 8 and 8.1 :

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031744

Not saying this is what is causing it - but may be worthwhile looking in to - perhaps disabling it - if possible.

If its the same problem as mine, it wouldn't be caused by Lenovo software.  I don't use a Lenovo machine.

I could really use a solution to this.  Its making Norton 360 unusable, and I'm getting to the point where I have to resubscribe to it for another year.  Clearly I'm not going to do that if the software isn't compatible with Windows 8.1.

It's not a general compatibility issue: I've been running it with Norton 8.1 for some time now (as, clearly, have most other users), without difficulty. But there could be something specific to a few configurations that's still causing a problem. That's what we're trying to identify here (and why the Lenovo question).

If we're lucky, it'll be something you can change at your end to resolve the problem (this usually turns out to be the case). If less so, it'll be something that requires some more attention from the development team. But one way or the other, if you can hang with us, we'll do our best to get everything working for you again.

Norton Studio is a new interface to your Norton protection that comes with at least some Win8 machines. This could be an important development, either for determining that you're at least being protected, and/or for helping us to figure out what's going on.

When you open your Norton Studio, in addition to that menu you describe, you should see the devices protected by your Norton subscription. Do you see a listing for the machine you're on (the one that's having the trouble)? If so, what does it say about its security status?

V/R,

--DistEd2

There was a program `rapid boot accelerator` or something like that.

I tried to disable it and restart, clicked Norton 360 icon, no hope.

Then I uninstalled that rapid boot software and tried again, no hope.

After I uninstallaed that software, I tried to use RnRN (remove and reinstall Norton).

Everything the same as before, at the end of the install it says I`m protected (without asking any activation code or something) and putting the icon on the desktop.

When I click the icon, nothing happens.

When I click the Norton 360 icon on the main menu (or start menu), it immediately opens desktop menu and just that, nothing happens again.

I checked Norton Studio

It shows Gray Color and says ``unknown``

However, it shows everyhing in GREEN for Windows 7 and gives how many days remaining, etc.

It says ``activated`` for Win 7.

So, Win 7 is working well as usual but only this new laptop with Win 8 still looks problem although I tried a lot

In Norton Solutions menu, I clicked `Management` button and it connected to internet, my account.

It shows both Win7 and Win8 with checked mark, I dont know what it means anyway.

Probably saying that two licences are being used.

Then I saw Lenovo Solution Center notice on the right bottom side of the window on desktop mode.

In the Security Menu it says I have Norton 360 installed on my computer but not activated, therefore my computer is not protected.

I think I spent quite a lot of time.

I`m about to give up and just remove all and pay for another virus software.

I even have no time and energy left to go to store and ask my money back for Win8 version but just pay again for another one.

(so it will become a rather expensive Norton 360 for me, paying for 3 licenses but cannot use one of them)

Appreciate if you have any further advise before I totally give up

I will try your advise, if any, and hope it works.

Hi Trw2006,

The following instructions are for Win 7 - but I do believe they will also work in Win 8 (I believe the lcoations, etc are the same).

Please skip anything that maynot aply - such as I do noot believ you have ID safe setup on the laptop yet.

I  feel the following may be worth a try on your Win 8 laptiop:

Please open Run by pressing windows key + R -> devmgmt.msc -> View Show

Hidden devices -> open Non-Plug and Play Drivers-> Maximize the Screen

If you have Identity Safe data Export it ->

Go to Control panel uninstall N 360 ->select the second option to

completely uninstall ->restart -> Run Norton Removal Tool -> Restart ->

Go to the maximized page -> if you find   NAVENG, NAVEX15, Norton Antivirus settings manager, starting from Symantec

Data Store to SymEvent (entries starting with Sym)  ->right click on them

click uninstall -> For the Restart prompts select no -> Go to Program files

if you find Norton Folder delete it -> Go to Run ->type temp ->Delete all

the files in there -> Run -> %temp% ->delete all ->Now Restart the PC -

>Install  the editiion of N 360 your license is for:

http://norton.com/latestn360 (standard)

http://norton.com/latestn360p (premiere)

->Run Live Update until you get no updates found

message ->restart PC

Let us know how it went for you.

Dear Yank,

Thank you for the instructions.

As you say, probably your advise would work for Win7 but although I tried 3 times, I still couldnt succeed for Win8+Lenovo.

Because I am extremely busy with my work and no time and energy to try more, I decided to give up.

Thank you for your advices so far anyway.

As a result, I`m happy with Norton 360 on my laptop with Win7, however, not happy with Norton 360 on my new laptop (Lenovo) with Win8.

So one of my licenses will be a waste but anyway.

I`ll remove as per your instructions for the last time and buy another one for my new laptop with Win8.

Regards
