I installed Norton 360 (V2.5.0.5) on XP to replace NIS2008 which had just expired. After installation the Security Details window showed virus definitions as dated 2/13/08 and automatic updates as deactivated. When I tried to run Live Update or a scan I got the message that "A scan is already running". Task Manager showed no scan running. The good side of this is that I was able to reach customer support by phone in 6 or 7 minutes. After taking over my PC the Tech's conclusion was that the install failed to completly uninstall NIS2008. He used the Norton Removal Tool to remove everything and reinstall N360 which now appears to be working fine.
My question is since many users are installing N360 to replace earlier products why does the install process not clean up all the old files by default? Failing that why not alert users to the necessity of using the Removal Tool as Step1. Providing efficient and competent Tech Support is great but why not avoid the problem in the first place?
