Norton 360 killing web access

About two weeks ago I purchased a new windows 8 PC and a windows 8 Pro upgrade. I was also persuaded to buy Norton 360 Gold. After 2 re-installations of Windows 8 Pro one of the many issues I am encountering is that Norton is turning off my browsers. I use Waterfox and IE utilising both tthe desktop and Metro interfaces.

I can be surfing,  when out of the blue my internet access stops and when the browser is stopped and re-started , one of two things happens - either I get a blank screen or the browser refuses even to start.-Clicking the icon gets no response. In the case of IE (Metro) the browser opens but if I try to type an address into it ,freezes on the first letter.

if I disable the firewall and A/V then the programs respond again.

I tried to set up firewall rules treating the .exe files as tusted applications and this works for about ten minutes then I lose connectivity again.

When I enter the firewall settings again , the rules I have just entered and saved are missing, as if the 360 has wiped them clean.

I have also tried re-installing the Norton 360 but the same symptoms remain.

I would be glad of any suggestions that may cure this problem.

Hi demotricus,

Waterfox is a 64 bit browser and there are not any 64 bit browsers supported by Norton - so that's the reason for that situation.

Which version of IE are you running?

I am ot a Win 8 user, ut thee is  interface that Norton doies not work on (becuase it does nto support add-ons - but I can not remember if it is Metro or Desktop.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of Win 8 will be able to supply correct info on what I am saying.

Windows 8 Pro 64bit, running current version Norton 360, Hyper-V Virtual and a lot of other stuff.

I am having the same problem with Browsers in Windows 8 Pro and it also extends to email, I can download email if the anti-virus is disabled, I have tried Eudora, Outlook, Thunderbird and Forte Agent, they all respond the same. Strangely though one account at Gmail works, whereas the rest of the POP3 accounts do not.

The Firefox usually works, however IE in the desktop and Chrome do not :smileysad:

I have Norton 360 Gold, or I should say I HAD Norton 360 Gold. I have now uninstalled it, - it was:-

1. slowing my computer to a crawl and

2. preventing other integral programs from operating as well - (mail programs).

I have no intention of stopping using Waterfox (I have it synced with firefox on three other computers and three android devices)-I find it to be the fastest browser you can use. period. and its a 64 bit program -(just like my 64 bit PC :-P)

if I thought I stood a chance of getting my money back then I`d be back down to PC  World like a whippet.

I now intend installing mcAffee which I receive as part of my BT internet service.

thank you for your answer, you made my mind up for me.

have a happy christmas!

Norton Offers a (I think) a 60 day return policy, So I would definitely try for a refund.  You could try Customer Support.  You can reach them at www.norton.com/chat.

Dave

Thank you I will try in the morning -(its 4.54am and this computer has kept me up enough!! -Time for bed..)

A question:- in the event of me not getting a refund, can I install the Norton 360 onto a seperate Vista laptop even though it has been installed on my Windows 8 Pro machine?

Actually I`m guessing I can because I am still showing 2 "seats"  left but it also still shows my Windows 8 computer as being registered - do I have to remove the license from this in order to use the product on another computer? -if I remone the license from the Windows 8 computer will I have 3 "seats" available?

Hi demotricus,

On the 3 user license, you can install another copy on the Vista Laptop - leaving you one "seat" for another system if you so desire.  I personally see no reason to go in and remove the license from the Win 8 system until such time as you may need an addtional seat.  In answer to your question, if you do remove the license from your Win 8 system (either via Chat or Norton Management) it will free up that seat - so yues, yu wuold have 3 after removing it from the Win 8 system and prior to using a seat to insatll on the laptop.  Be advised, that merely removing (uninstalling) N 360 from the win 8 system will NOT free up a seat.

Also the clock starts running ont he license on the fristinsatlla tion you make - thus the Win 8 install started the 1 year and that is the exipration date (in one year) on all the seats - regardless of the insatll date on the remainder of the license.

OK to rephrase my question slightly, -if I LEAVE the "seat" registered on the win 8 machine (but not actually installed on it), -will I be able to re-install the resident norton software onto my machine in say a months time? - (I`m aware that the "clock would still be running" on the license).

Or is it the case that if I wanted to use it in a months time I would have to re-purchase a license?

I`m thinking I should learn to use it and configure it on a machine that is not so critical to me..

Yes, you can leave the "seat" registered against that system and uninstall N 360.  If at a future date you decide to reinstall N 360 on that system, you can do so and do not need to purchase another license.
