Norton 360 Live update

Hello Krusty13
I have looked in the Norton tasks and it I have clicked on configure on pulse updates and it comes up with select power source External or External and Battery so does this mean that when my laptop isn’t plugged in it won’t run pulse updates? And one more thing I have identity safe maintenance and it says failed to complete but it’s greyed out and you can’t click it, is this the safe which stores passwords online because in that case I don’t use it.

Thanks a lot

Don't worry about the maintance task, it will complete on it's own sooner or later.

Yes, if you are running on battery on a laptop, None of those tasks will run unless you click the Configure [+] button and change it.

This is what the configure will look like and the options for useage of a power source - so it will run on only AC power (mains) or on both battery and AC power.

The grayed out task you have no control over they are just there for showing you what is going on in the back ground.  FWIW, my last Identity Safe Maintenance was accomplished Feb 20th on one system and Feb 23 on another system.

Hello Krusty13
I didn’t look at the task properly it said it was last run today but must of failed to complete when I turned my computer on about 5 mins ago. And also sorry for all the questions but there’s one in the Norton tasks called Norton Insight and it says I cancelled it but I didn’t? And when I ran the Norton insight normally and then went back to the Norton tasks it didn’t say it was running. Are these two different components?

Thanks a lot and sorry for loads of questions

Hello yank
Thank you for your information here too I think this mat of been why my computer wasn’t doing live updates for a while and I think this was because it needed to be plugged in to the mains. I will use my computer tomorrow to test to see if this is right!

Thanks a lot

Yes, different components.

Usually these task run when your system is idle, so if it is running and you move your mouse, or press a keyboard key it will wait until your system is idol again.

Thanks a lot guys!
I’m sorry about a lot of questions but I always get worried about my computer!
So is there nothing to worry about that greyed out component and the Norton insight component? And I will also get back to this thread tomorrow when I use my computer to see if it runs the live update properly.

Thanks a lot guys and sorry for posting a lot!

Hi, AudiA1.

I saw your detailed report from earlier.  You stated the following:

6:31PM automatic live update green text reset ran a manual live update after and got nothing

7:26PM 55 mins without a live update ran it manually and got the pulse update

So was your laptop unplugged for much of that time?

It looks like the rest of the time you were getting LiveUpdates pretty regularly.  If the answer is yes, then I agree with the others that it was due to the way the power source was set in Norton.

Hi Inquirer
I’m not too sure if it was plugged in or not if I’m honest but when I next use it I’ll see if the update are running smoothly!

Thanks a lot for the help!

No problem.  Just keep observing.  :smileyhappy:

Hello Inquirer
These are the updates that I have had recently
3:08 computer turned on
Manual update 3:12
Auto update 3:30
Pulse update 3:31
Pulse update 3:36
Pulse update 3:41
Pulse update 3:52
Pulse update 3:57
Pulse update 4:02
Pulse update 4:12
Pulse update 4:17
Pulse update 4:22
Pulse update 4:32
Pulse update 4:42
Pulse update 4:47
Pulse update 4:57
Manual live update and got web protection 4:59
Pulse update 5:02

Do all of these seem normal to you? I haven’t turned my computer off yet but I’ve been monitoring the live update 3 ish and it’s quite tiring!
And just one more question. In the Norton tasks on the performance flip over there’s a task called Norton Insight and it says that I canceled it? Is this a important thing to run because my tick on Norton is green and says I’m safe! Is that anything to worry about?

Thanks a lot!

All looks about normal to me.

I have already mentioned that Norton Insight will complete when your system becomes idol.  FYI Norton Insight only runs once a day on my systems.

Can you stop worrying so much?

Cheers!

Hi Krusty13!
Thanks for the reasurrence so I’m guessing it doesn’t really matter if the system goes idol or not because I never really let it go idol when I’m using it? And just one more question sorry I know! There’s this task called insight optimizer and the last time that ran was the 11/1/2014 is that okay as well?

And I do agree with you I need to stop worrying so much I just need to realize that Norton is a great product and will keep me protected!

Sorry for the questions!
Thanks a lot

I'd suggest that a least once or twice a week to leave your system idol for an hour or so to let Norton perform it's scheduled and background tasks.  If you never give Norton some 'free time' you might find that it will force the tasks while you're using your system and this could cause your system to slow.

I leave my system alone for periods throughout each day giving Norton time to do what it needs.

Insight Optimizer usually only runs after you install a new program or update some of the programs you already have.  Here's some information about Insight Optimizer  -  About the Idle Time Optimizer

Hi Krusty13
Thanks for the information. When I leave my system idol it goes to the black screen and puts the computer to sleep, does Norton still perform these tasks while its asleep or should I change the way my computer acts to being left idol?

Thanks a lot!

No, Norton won't be able to run it's tasks when asleep.  Can you change / extend the time before your system sleeps?

Edit : Bear in mind that those tasks will not run when running on batteries unless you change them as per http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Norton-360-Live-update/m-p/1099613/highlight/true#M101237

Hello Krusty13
I have extended the time and made it so it my computer will never fall asleep! I will try and do as you said and leave it on for an hour a week but does it matter if I don’t do it every week and instead do it maybe every 2 weeks or so? Just because I use my computer a lot on a regular basis!

Thanks a lot

I've edited my above post.

Can't you find an hour or so a day or two where you can walk away, maybe while having lunch or dinner, perhaps at the end of the day before you shut it down?

Hello Krusty13
I suppose I’ll try and make time for it when I’m having lunch or dinner or not near the computer and what do these tasks actually do out of curiosity? (I think I’ll start doing this tomorrow! Because Thursday is scan day!) And just one last question regarding the Norton tasks panel there’s one called AntiSpam Maintenance it’s listed just bellow Identity safe maintenance and it says it failed to complete it is one of the greyed out tasks which I’m guessing it means the computer needs to be idol for it to perform?

Thanks a lot for this helpful information!
