Answers follow:

1. Windows XP. I think SP3 is installed.

2. When I click About nothing happens.Tried several times.

3. Other Norton / Symantec products installed:

 - Live Update (Symantec Corporation)

 - Live Update notice

 - Symantec Technical Support Web Controls

4: Previous Products

      - Norton 2007 (?) see previous emails.

5: Previous AV: Had AVG Free, and separately Norton 2007(?)

     No other antivirus presently installed

6. What is LUALL - LIve Update All ?? Tried from within product. And also from LIve Update attached to Start menu.

7. Fix:

In the At Risk box, I hit the red fix button.

Also, under the View Details: I hit Update, Fix, etc .

Also the blue Fix button at bottom near Close button .

None of the above has any effect.

Thanks,

Brendan

It does not sound good, if you cannot get to about, and I do need to know if you installed version 1 or 2.

It is also not clear if you just installed or if it was working and now suddenly it is not working.

If you installed, did you first remove Norton 2007 or did you leave Norton 360 to remove any prior av.

Did you use Norton Removal Tool in addition to uninstalling Norton 2007?

Go to your account at Symantec and check registration, that may tell you what version you licenced and installed.

Luall, is an alternative based live update. You just go to Start, run command, and type luall.

Without knowing what was at risk and getting more details, I have no idea if you have infected system.

I suspect in the end you will have to uninstall, use NRT for Norton 360 and NRT for NOrton 2007, and then reinstall.

There is a free upgrade to version 2, and you can enter your previous product code I believe to get this to work.

I can provide links to everything, but it will take time, and I do not know if you want to go this route or what for other contributors with other ideas.

As a starter

1.  here is the link to check your account

2. I suggest you also goto start, run command, and type mrt - this wil run Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool. You should select full scan and see what results you get.

cgoldman is dealing with your technical problem but just a suggestion. It is not a good idea to publish personal data like phone numbers online. If you go with your browser to read your message and click on Options the first line says Edit Message.

Click on that and you can go in and change the text so I suggest you delete those two lines.

I would also suggest that you give a link to the "other message" you refer to so that readers can jump to it and see what it was about.

Good luck on finding the solution. It certainly sounds as if N360 did not install properly and needs to be removed and cleaned up as cgoldman suggests.

I would not trust an older copy of SymNRT to be able to remove all the latest patches to the software. Since Norton are updating their products all the time, the Norton Removal Tool is constantly updated.

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.

I think you should get the N360 tool and the Norton 2007 (you have to decide which version you had) tool to remove traces of both and then reboot.

Thank you so much for stepping in. Very remise of me. I did see those details and thought you want a phone call!?!

lol,

I simply did not have time for the search for the other emails and your suggestions are just perfect.

Keep jumping in because I'm lonely.

Can you please check whether you sold me Version 1 or 2, thanks.I had it installed and working. The problems developed later .You should know this from your records anyway. There should be a record around 28 May 2008.

Will have to check what exactly was done, and will get back to you.

I will check my account.

Brendan

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'last 2 lines'.Must check, cannot see phone number ??

N360 was working fine before the latest problems.

Thanks for your help

Brendan

Go back and have a look at your first message and you'll see that it now ends:

Allen K is a moderator here and has keys to the kingdom so he can do things that you can do, like remove your phone numbers, but we users cannot.
PS Having just read your latest message to cgoldman, let me explain one more thing. Norton Staffers have their name in red as the sender; others like cgoldman and me are just users sharing our experience with others and learning as we do.
So we don't have any data on you that we can access unless you post it.
If you open your file manager -- Windows Explorer or whatever you use and navigate down to the folder under Program Files that contains N360, assuming that all the files were copied over, look for an .exe file (you may have to click on Tools / Folder Options in your Windows Explorer and then on VIew and uncheck the box that says Hide extensions for known files. That's a stupid default setting that Microsoft uses and it means that if you have a bunch of different purpose files like setup.exe and setup.ini you can't tell them apart easily.
Anyway find some of those files, right mouse click on one of them and select Properties and then Details and you should see the version number (not V1 or V2 but a multi-digit code that will enable someone to tell you what version you have).

I wish I had more time .....

At Ton' W's suggestion I've made some macros -- upon your profile and click on macros -- to insert a bit of text and a link for NIS and NRT.....

I'll assume you now better understand the forum, and you are working to find out which version you were running. Since you had Norton 360 working and it is not now, we can assume that something caused Norton 360 not to be working. It is possible that you have got a virus, so that is why I asked that you start with "mrt". Once you have done this, I suggest you download either the Protection scanner from Onecare at Microsoft (link here ) or Malwarebytes (see message 14 at this  link). You could also try Kaspersky scanner. This is no detriment to Norton 360 but since Norton 360 has fallen over, you need to be a little sure that you are not heavily infected.

If you need to uninstall Norton 360 to effect above, then do so. Once you are clear of virus reports, you should proceed to uninstall Norton 360 (unless done already), run Norton Removal Tool for Norton 360, and Norton Removal Tool for Norton 2007. Then reinstall.

You are advised to read this Advisory thread.

You will I hope have already read or re-read this thread on Participation Guidelines.

Hope thats enough. Just let me know if you need any further direction.

Among the other suggestions listed here, I would also recommend contacting our Customer Support team through the product’s Help & Support link. Or you can visit the below site to contact our free Customer Support:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

If you have already done this and they could not resolve your issue, please let us know. Thanks!

Many thanks for your help!

In the Norton 360 folder, these are the executable files:

Mainstub.exe - File Version 2.3.0.9 ,      Product Ver 2.3

osCheck.exe - File Version 2.0.0.242    Product Version 2.0

Scanstub.exe - File Version 2.0.0.242   Product Version 2.0

tpNet-Map.exe - File Version2.0.0.42     Product Version 2.0

LUALL wil not run.Error message mentions problem with configuration and suggessts re-install.

More later, thanks.

No, I do not expect LUALL to run, it is just that you started with Live Update will not run, but in fact your problem is so much more than live update not running, the basic program appears to have fallen over. i.e. you cannot get to "About Norton 360".

No point trying to sort existing instalation, in my opinion, yes check your are virus free and reinstall. We will see what problems you have after a reinstallation, if any. I personally can help you out today and tomorrow only.

ok, thanks.

I remember having some difficulties around the 18th May and one of your staff sorted them for me.I just cannot find the records.

Problem was that a subscription would not  renew after I had paid, but he solved the problem for me.

I'm  just re-reading the posts here.Back in a while.

Rather looks like you have version 2 then .... <g>

I remember that you have phone numbers in Eire -- how did you get your copy of N360? Did you buy it retail in a store or download it on-line. If on-line did you get it from the website that serves Eire or from the US one? Is your version of Windows localized or from the US?

I ask because sometimes these country differences can affect operation.

But my advice is to follow what cgoldman suggests checking with an on-line scan from a reputable source and then uninstalling and cleaning up for N360 and your previous 2007 version of NIS (?) and then reinstall.

ok, I have Norton 360, the executable file is N360s200.exe.

I also have the product key.

I had not backed up online or  used add-ons so I presume I will not need to use budump.exe ?

To clarify, is this the sequence ?

 - Use the NRT to remove Norton 360 and its predecessor : I think it was Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2007.

 - Check for viruses etc as you have indicated.

 - Re-install.

Other:

In December 2007 I tried to purchase and download a package but the file was corrupt when I received it.

I originally reported the problem of the corrupt file download as : Technical Support [Incident: 071231-000530] ;

Order Number : 1637823655.

That may have been NIS .

The support person who solved the problems in May 2008, helped me upgrade to Norton 360.

My account lists no products.I may have created an account after uninstalling the previous product .

Brendan

Many thanks for your help.

N360 was a download. I dealt with a UK support person and he had all my Ireland details etc, so I assumed it was correct for Ireland.

My Windows XP was already installed when I bought this laptop, a Toshiba Satellite, in Cork, Ireland.

There were problems with a previous upgrade attempt for NIS , the downloaded file was corrupt ; and the solution involved downloading N360 instead.

Brendan Long,

Cork city,

Ireland

OK -- that fills in the gaps nicely.

Laptops -- and I hate to say it but Toshiba Laptops -- are a law unto themselves when it comes to problems since they have so much customized hardware and software. But let's hope that the problem is not there.

Check out the message here from Tony Weiss since he is a Norton Staffer. Give him time to spot your reply to me that you have been to Customer Service and see what he suggests.

Correct, you do not need to use budump.exe

Sequence, I would suggest is as follows:

Check for virus before doing anything. MRT, and any one of the others. It makes no great difference, because the chances are each will in all events produce slightly different results. This is an inperfect world.

1. Goto Start, Programs, Norton 360, and select uninstall.

2. If above causes any problem, goto control panel, classic, Add/remove programs, and select Norton 360, and uninstall, repeat for Liveupdate and anything which is not then removed and relates to Norton 360.

3. Follow links previously given for NRT, and check you download NRT appropriate for Norton 360 v2. Run.

4. Follow link previously given for NRT or search symantec web site for NRT appropriate to NIS failed version upgrade or known previous installation.

5. reinstall Norton 360 v2 from known good source. Again links are available upon request and well posted in other threads.

If you do not have an account, then you need to sort this out. Otherwise if you have product codes etc for Norton 360 v2, you can go ahead.

Hope this helps
