Norton 360 on wndows 8.1

Hello,i hope this is in the right section and is okay but something happened today that has promted me to sign up and post this.

i've bought a new gaming laptop and before it has been despatched i recieved a telephone call from the company offering me a load of services i don't need (which i turned down).

the part that is relevant was when trying to sell me anti virus, she was telling me that because it uses windows 8 that norton will cause serious slowdown (i hadn't told here that's what i already use and will install on this new laptop) she ended it by saying "do not install norton"

while i know she was just trying to sell me another anti-virus (i'm not that naive) she did plant a seed of doubt,i've been searching all day for information and it looks like there were issues in 2013 but the latest updates have sorted those problems.

all i'm after is some reassurance that there are no slowdown issues with Norton 360 and windows 8.1.i've been using Norton for about 6 years with little to no problems (that's why i haven't signed up before now) but this one being a gaming laptop i don't want it unnecessarily taking performance from the system.

to be honest i've been using vista for 6 years so the new system will probably look like lightning to me anyway :smileywink:

sorry for the first long post.

i have loaded N360 on a win8 (uprgraded to 8.1)desktop and a new 8.1 laptop, and have not experienced any sort of slowdowns.  I think you'll be fine:)

thanks for the reply,i'll admit i've been a little worried.after hours of looking for information through search engines i thought i would go to the source.

Apart from the sell him something more profitable to me aspect you mention, most of the Norton makes your system crawl comments are based on versions from 2009 and earlier some of which really did have  a bad effect. But Norton totally rethought and rewrote the Norton programs and since then they have totally changed and are regularly reported as having the least effect on system performance. So I'd not worry.

Just be certain you get the current version and get it fully uptodate ..... and keep it uptodate.

Make sure you get that Windows 8.1 Update that came out in April which puts the search and exit icons on the Start Screen since without that update you won't get the Windows Updates from May onwards -- security fixes etc!

I'd be inclined to disable any functions in N360 that you don't really need and at some point consider Norton Internet Security unless you must have the free cloud storage. NIS is cheaper and uses he same protection without the add-ons not related to security.

Hi step,

As I understand it, you must be updated to the latest version 21.2.0.38 in order for compatability with Win 8.1, so it is important to emsure you are totally up to date with N360.

thankyou both for the reply.

@huwyngr - when i bought norton originally it came with the three pc's deal of which i've only used one so i'll stick with that rather than buying a different package, especially since the 360 has not long been renewed.

i always update norton as soon as i turn on my current laptop so that will not be an issue with the new one, also the person i spoke to told me the company will fully test the new laptop and update windows and all the drivers before shipping so i should be ready to download norton as soon as it arrives (after removing any other third party anti-virus first of course).

@yank - when i sign into norton account i see my 3 licenses and that i have 2 available and a download prompt,i'm assuming this is the latest version (minus a few updates).is that correct ?

That is correct - the Yellow Download Button will download, install and activate the most current version of N 360 (which will be21.2.0.38).  However, you will still have to run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) ubntil such time as LiveUpdate responds with the specific words "no updates found".  That will ensure you have the latest definitions.

Step,

Trust but verify ...

Run Windows Update yourself until it tells you there are no more update -- Microsoft push out security updates out of sequence. The drivers you can leave unless you have a problem.

@both - i would have done that anyway but i appreciate the advise :smileyhappy:

completely off topic but i've just had an e-mail saying the laptop has been despatched.

What means Off Topic? <g>

Always of interest and sometimes more than useful to know what make and model the laptop is ....

I do support elsewhere and so it's useful to know what people are buying.

it is the MSI GE60 2PE Apache Pro

i've read as many reviews as i could find and the only real downside is a very sluggish mouse pad it might be software, hardware or a mixture of both.if i find it too annoying i'll just plug in a wireless mouse which do work fine.

Sounds like quite a monster if you get 2 x SSDs !

I've always disliked touchpads so I wouldn't wait to get a mouse -- I thought gamers had their own mousing devices.

You may find Benchmark Reviews a useful source of information -- they often touch on gaming accessories like keyboards and mouse-like devices.

i do have a wireless mouse but it's not a gaming one, since i don't really do online pc gaming (i tend to stick to consoles for that) it's not so important.

it will be mainly for single player games, seeing one play skyrim on ultra at 60 fps with a couple of mods certainly helped my decision to buy :smileylol:

Enjoy it .....

I must got a new computer with Windows 8.1 64 bit. I installed N360 and am having a couple of weird problems. First, I always get 2 N360 icons in the system tray. Second, when I look at Task Manager, it shows 2 N360 processes running, and they're both using CPU and disk resources at the same time. I also noticed both versions of N360 are 32 bit, which puzzles me as I have a 64 bit system. I do have the latest update mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'm guessing I should uninstall and reinstall it, but would appreciate any thoughts from people on the forum.

Hi,

What you are seeing, at the exception of 2 systray icons, is normal.

Try in N360 settings to change the Boot Time Protection to Aggressive.

Reboot.

It's more than a workaround that usually works.

You have 2x N360 *32 processes in taskmgr because N360 is a 32 bit application not fully 64-bit.

Hope this helps,

Apostolos:

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. My old computer is Win 7 64 bit, which I've used for years. Once in a while, 2 N360 icons showed up, but it was rare. Also, on Win 8.1, if I put N360 into silent mode, one of the icons shows that it is in silent mode, but the other does not. When it comes out of silent mode, one of the icons still shows that it's in silent mode even though it's not. I did use aggressive boot with Win 7, so I'll give it a try with Win 8.1.

Thanks again.

I saw this the other day with NIS on Win 8.1Update Pro 32 bit and since I say both icons in the "Configure" table I just set one to hide ..... and after a while a Norton Management icon, which is different, appeared so I'm wondering if the System Tray got confused at some point ....

I'm not on that OS at the moment but I'll recheck later as soon as I have time.

OK, tried aggressive boot, but it didn't change anything. No big deal, just a change in behaviour from Win 7. I'll do what Hugh did and hide one of the icons.
