I am running Norton 360 in Windows 10. Periodically, a Norton “pop up” (I don’t know what else to call it) appears on the right side of the screen. It is not a browser pop up. It is, for lack of a better description, a “stand alone” pop up. The last one I saw described, for example, how many bad registry items were found, the amount of junk data on my hard drive, … things like that. But this pop up is somewhat unique in that it is badly formatted/presented. Most of the content is just unformatted text. And it has text in it that says, “Remind me later” and “Don’t show this again”, and at the bottom, “Continue”, but nothing is clickable. And it looks like some images should have been loaded, but there are those small, square icons that indicate a broken link to the image. And the worst part about it is the fact that I cannot close it or get rid of it. Some of the larger, longer pop ups occupy about 20% of the right side of the screen. Oh, and when I try to take a screen shot using the Snipping Tool or my Snagit app, the pop up disappears until I close the screen capture tool and then the pop up returns. Weird.
Has anyone else seen this?
Are there any suggestions about what to do about this?
Thanks.
Its just Norton’s adware trying to scare non-techy customers into thinking they need to pay more for something they don’t need.
Would just ignore and disable/avoid using their “Smart Scan” as these ads are built into the final step.
Yes, I realize that these messages are trying to sell me something. But that’s not the problem. The problem is that these pop up messages are messed up and unformatted and have no clickable elements. There is no way to close the pop up dialog and remove it from the screen. It just sits there in front of everything and covering up about 20% of my display.
I would ignore it if I could, but I cannot make it go away. Well … I can make it go away if I restart my computer. But that is obviously unacceptable.
THAT’S the problem I am trying to solve.
It just happened again. I am staring at this annoying message in the lower-right of my screen that sort of looks like it is from Norton 360, but there are no clickable elements in the message to make it go away. (The text that says, “Don’t show again” and “Remind me later” are not clickable - they do nothing when you hover or click on them.) There is no way to remove this message. I tried to upload a screen shot … don’t know if that worked.
What is this junk and where is it coming from??
You know, I heard that Windows Defender provides pretty good virus and malware protection. And it is a whole lot less resource intensive and does not produce this junk that shows up on my screen and won’t go away. I have already ditched Norton on one of my laptops. I may kill it on my other devices as well since Norton has no solution to this problem.
any chance you’re seeing Windows Notification?
for example:
Enable or Disable Notification Center in Windows 11 [here]
Hmmm … @bjm , I am not EXACTLY sure what you are asking. But I obviously did have some sort of notification. When I clicked on the Notifications icon in the tray, there was one notification, but it had nothing to do with Norton 360. I suppose I could Manage Notifications to try to avoid seeing these messages. Is that what you are suggesting? It would not answer the question regarding why these poorly formatted, un-clickable, un-closeable messages appear in the first place, but it might prevent them from appearing. Your thoughts?
Okay…so, you’re saying this is not a Windows Notification…you’re reporting this is a poorly formatted, un-clickable, un-closeable Norton popup.
head scratch how I can reproduce…my side
fwiw ~ were my machine - I’d clean install Norton 360 - just me
Yes. @bjm , I do not believe this is a Windows notification. I have seen similar messages like this from Norton 360. But in those other “normally” formatted messages, there is usually some image or logo that identifies the message as coming from Norton 360. And in the other, correctly formatted messages, (if I am remembering accurately) there is, for example, a “X” in the top-right corner of the message and when you click on the “X” to close the message, it gives you the choice of “Don’t show again” or “Remind me later”. So, this bad message is an approximation of what should be there but, for some reason, it is not properly formed and displayed.
Yes. Exactly! That’s what I would expect to see for messages of the type that I am describing. In the example you are showing, you are able to view and close the message. In my case, the message cannot be closed.
I have noticed, however, in some cases, when I have been “patient enough” or if I get distracted, the message will disappear on its own after, say, about 5 or 10 minutes. I haven’t actually timed it, but who wants to wait that long for an annoying message that blocks part of your screen to disappear?
and your Norton 360 is otherwise working as expected?
========================================
If your Norton is not working as expected after you’ve tried Reset to Default & Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Norton Community is primarily user-to-user “working” product help.
Yes. As far as I can tell, the product is otherwise working as expected. In fact, I do get the occasional message from Norton that is correctly formatted and I can interact with it or close it, for example, to start a Smart Scan or something else. But, occasionally, I’ll get one of these weird ones.
Yes, I will likely reach out to Norton Support. Thanks for the link.
