Norton 360 PREMIER, install Incompatible error with: Windows 8.1 Pro Media Center (clean install)

First I upgraded my laptop from “Windows 8.1 Preview with Media Center” (beta stuff) to the new version, I ended up doing a clean install of “Windows 8.0 Pro with Media Center”, then upgrading to “Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center”.

Next attempted many different options to install “N360-PREMIER-ESD-20-3-0-36-EN.exe” with all ending with the following error; and I unchecked the “compatibility mode”, download the application twice, and even tried to run as administrator.

“Error: "This product is not compatible with this computer's current operating system..." when I install my Norton product”

Then installed, “N360-TW-21.1.0-EN-US.exe” (trial version).

No problems, but when I tried to install “N360-PREMIER-ESD-20-3-0-36-EN.exe” without uninstalling “N360-TW-21.1.0-EN-US.exe” I received another error message.

“Error: "You are attempting to install a version of Norton [product name] that is older than the one currently installed on your PC" when I install my Norton product”

Now that was before I ran live update of” N360-TW-21.1.0-EN-US.exe”.  The version after update is: “Intrusion Prevention Engine version: 6.0.0.265”.

Then, why does N360-PREMIER have an older version then N360-TW? I also tried to update the key in the trial version with the key I purchased for N360-PREMIER and it did not work (I was just hoping it would work and be done with it). In the past a trial versions would accept a valid key.

Why has the web an older version for N360-PREMIER?

Additionally, I was one of those who downloaded “Windows 8.1 Preview” and used your beta version until your policies would not allow a renewal even though I still have a paid license for N360 (3 users) that I could not use but one of them. So I have been using Microsoft’s tools without an issue. Did I learn a lesson from beta software from Microsoft---yes be more cautious about impact upon other products like Norton and a VPN provider.

I upgraded my other computer to “Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center” running N360 without a problem; that 3 user license ends soon. The point---it worked without a glitch, so I purchased another 3-user package N360-PREMIER and having nothing but problems again.

What gives, MAYBE I am learning a lesson about Norton’s products…

What is the solution to the Incompatible problem?

I see the version number is in the file name.

If Norton 360 PREMIER version 20 does not work with Windows 8.1, why is it available on the web site?

(("The Norton Remove and Reinstall tool installs.....................Norton 360, the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool reinstalls the same version of the Norton security product on your computer."))

The tool does not provide the ability to switch from Norton 360 trial version to the 360 Premier. On my laptop the installation of 360 Premier will not even begin. If I misinterpreted the tool's statement please advise.

So how do I obtain version 21 or newer of 360 Premier to install on my two laptops running Windows 8.1 Pro Media Center?

The best I can tell, the installed trial version of Norton 360 is running and with liveupdate has the most recent updates.

I assume (hate that word) you are talking about the version 20 that you have download the file for or version 21 from the trial.  At this point it doesn't matter which one you have installed - we'll prss on.

If Norton 360 PREMIER version 20 does not work with Windows 8.1, why is it available on the web site?

It is still available on the website because there are users who have not upgraded to version 21, have not upgraded to Win 8 .1 and in some cases do not intend to upgrade to either.  Thus they need to be able to have the version 20 download available for reinstallation if they desire to stay on version 20 and must remove and reinstall or if in fact they have a situation with version 21 and the answer is to revert to version 20.  If you have a look around at different programs you will see other products offer older versions of their programs.

That statement is incorrect it does what I stated in my previous post " this should remove your current installation and reinstall and activate the most current version that is available for download. "

Quoted from the link provided for the NRnRT, the introduction states:

The Norton Remove and Reinstall tool uninstalls all supported Norton products from your computer, and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product. If you already have the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360, the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool reinstalls the same version of the Norton security product on your computer.

I will admit it may be poorly worded and does not spell out that it will remove and reinstall the same product (ie remove N 360 and reinstall N 360 - but it will always install the most current version (v 21.1.0.18 in this case)

The tool does not provide the ability to switch from Norton 360 trial version to the 360 Premier. On my laptop the installation of 360 Premier will not even begin. If I misinterpreted the tool's statement please advise.

The NRnRT does not provide the ability to switch from N 360 to NIS or vice-versa.  As long as you have the trial completely installed and activated the NRnRT should first remove the trial and then install the most recent version (v 21.1.0.18) of N 360 autoomatically.  One the tool starts it shold do it all up thru activation by itself (othere than reuqesting a reboot after the uninstall part.

I am not 100% positive if there is a N 360 Premier trial and you may raise a good question - Standard and Premier are the same product - but in fact a different edition, so is the NRnRT compatible.  I will try to get an answer from Norton.

So how do I obtain version 21 or newer of 360 Premier to install on my two laptops running Windows 8.1 Pro Media Center?

I am not familiar with the Media Center version of Windows - perhaps someone else can assist if that matters.  I know the Media Center was supported in 32 bit XP - but that is ancient.

The following is the most recent download of N 360 Premiere:

You should be able to get a fresh copy of V21 as long as you have a current subscription for 360 Premier. You get this from your Norton Account with the instructions below.

You need to remove the failed installation attempts with the Norton Removal Tool.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here   www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

I appreciate the support...

Today, I had a Norton Chat and was told to try another site:

http://us.norton.com/digital/promo and followed the instructions.

I was able to install the software on both of my Laptops problem free.

For completeness, I purchased my software from Walmart, a Fast card that told me to download

http://us.norton.com/walmart/n360md which is version 20.

For the Premier version we use this link:

http://norton.com/latestn360p

That always gives you the "latest" released version.

Hi JR3,

Thanks for the feedback - hopefully it may help others in the future - sure taught me something! :smileywink:

Very interesting twist of events  I have never seen the first link you provided (as provided you by Chat, nor have i ever heard of the Walmart Multi-Device for 3 devices.  I thought Multi-Device was offered for 5 devices.  It must be a special deal from Wally World (Wal-Mart).
