Norton 360 preventing use of usb drive?

I'm using Windows 7 and just purchased & installed 360. I'm trying to open a SanDisk Titanium 2GB drive - no matter which port I use, it will not open. When I switch to my laptop with Windows XP (which does not have 360 installed), it opens without any problems. Have not made any other changes/installations to my Windows 7 machine since last using the usb perhaps two weeks ago.

I've tried disabling all features of 360 temporarily, but to no avail. Any & all help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

which security product did you have on the machine before 360? And how did you removed it?

Most  AV products have specialized removal tools as most of the times these can not be removed properly via a simple uninstall.

I was using Avast for anti-virus, ZoneAlarm for firewall - both were removed via the control panel, which opened the uninstall feature for each app.

You should try running these two apps:

Let us know the results.

I've run both uninstallers, but the problems persists, unfortunately.

Hi acolyte,

It doesn't really sound like something that Norton 360 would cause - especially it the problem persists after disabling N360.  Do other USB devices work?

Do you have a USB printer plugged in?

I love my sandisk titanium,  sadly I don't think they make them anymore :(

I never had a problem with mine with the 360 betas on XP or windows 7.

But I use mine just as a regular flash drive.

Do you have yours setup with some kind of software that allows you to autorun programs, a special menu, or encryption?

Those work by actually emulating a virtual CD-Rom and the program autostarts from the virtual CD to then run programs off the flash drive.  (It actually creates 2 drives in my computer).

I know there was a long topic about those flash drives not working a while back and I'm not sure if it was resolved.

Dave

Hi,

I am not an expert, but Flash Drive is a major headache, the way they made them now.

What I did last time, but my flash drive was broken anyway.

In Windows 7, plug your USB flashdrive to your USB port,  go to  Strat-, then -devices and printers. Right click on Mass storage device, and click on Troubleshoot. See what happens then. if it cannot read it,  than maybe something wrong physically with your USB port,, since your USB flash drive is readable on another PC.

or while having your flash drive in-

go to start-control panel- Device manager-click on disk drives(does it recognize or list your flashdrive there?), and then on Universal serial bus controllers, see whether machine recognizes and lists your USB drive?

As  last resort, do you remember the time frame when yor flash drive was working ok? Perhaps, you need to restore your PC to earlier time to see whether it will solve the problem. Before that do system restore point. So, you can go back on what you have now)

Another thing, when I dealt with that issue, some people also have similar problems , I don't know why, but their USB flash drive at some point while it is unredable on one PC, it is redable on the other. I was thinking about this trick, before you do restore points and stuff. Why don't you buy another flash drive, from your laptop- store some file in it, and go ahead and try to open that flashdrive on your PC with the Norton 360. Does it open? If yes, then you can transfer all the files you have using yout laptop, from your flashdrive  to that new flashdrive, and use it on the PC with Norton 360. Check over , maybe there's a file that causing a problem preventing it from opening on your PC with Norton 360. Could one of the files be infected with virus, that's why it won't open, because Norton is blocking it. let me know the results!

Sorry for my rant. Before you do anything check your flashdrive with anivirus program on your laptop. Sometimes, when there's a file infected with virus or somehow it is damaged, flashdrive may not open because Norton cannot read it. Thenn, read my other suggestions. I am not an expert, but I dealth with that issue before.

Hi. Yes, all other USB devices work. And the USB drive works fine on my laptop, which doesn't have 360 installed.

Yes, I have an HP 1012 plugged in.

Did a virus scan from my laptop - nothing turned up on the USB.

On my PC, I'm able to open the USB with no problems on Ubuntu in VirtualBox as well.

When you plug it in, do Windows write out anything (like the device can not be detected properly, or something like that)?

And did you tried to plug it in into the same USB port every time? If yes, please try another port on your PC as well. (I saw magic with different Windows versions many times :P)

When I plug it in, it initially appears in the list of available drives on my computer, but when I click on it, it *very* slowly tries reading from it, then gives the following alert:

H:\ is not accessible.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I've tried it on every USB port I got. Doesn't make a difference.

1)Go to start- Device manager, right click on Disk drives and click on Scan for Hardware changes. Also there is a Universal Serial Bus Controller, do the same thing. Do you have another Flash drive? If so, plug into computer with Norton 360 installed, and see whether it will open any other flashdrive.  If you don't have another one, just buy, even the cheap one, and store some files from your flashdrive, if it does open any other flashdrive, then it means that that one that deosn't opne,  has some file that Norton blocks or that Flash drive is somehow problematic.

2) Use malwarebytes.org their software to detect , maybe a virus to scan your PC, download, install/update with the latest updates, and do a QUICK SCAN., not just your USB , but entire drive C.IInstall malware bytes on your laptop, plug your Flash drive, and let malwarebytes scan your USB drive and entir e C, it might find something. You can also do a Full system scan.

3). maybe restoring your PC to a previous state when usb Flash drive worked fine , would do the trick.Probably after that you will need to reinstall your Norton. Make sure that you already have a Restore point or create a new one, if you want to go back to your PC state as it is now

4) is your PC is out of warranty? If not, then contact manufacturer. They can acces remotely your PC, and see what the problem is. If it out of warranty, than you will have to pay for technical support, I think.

5) finally, go to

http://us.norton.com/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

Tell them what the problem is, request supervisor if it needed. You will have to give them permission to access your PC remotely. I hope they can fix the problem. If not, then they MUST replace your PC with some other Norton compatible software.

Let me know , how it's going.

It seems to me that instead of screwing around your PC, you have to contact Symantec.

Bobcat1 and everyone: thanks for all your advice. I'll follow up with tech support and see how it goes. Cheers.

Uninstall Norton 360 from your computer and check whether you can access the USB device. Reinstall Norton 360 and report back with the results. This will help us to know whether Norton 360 is causing a problem with your Sandisk device or not.
