I uninstalled Norton - the USB drive worked instantly. I reinstalled Norton - the USB drive went back to not working.
Going to tech support now. If they can't help me, I'll be asking for my money back. End of story.
Problem solved: was due to incompatibility between a driver & the format of my USB drive (if I understood correctly). Tech support is familiar with the issue, though it's not exactly common. FYI to anyone else who might experience the same problem.
