Norton 360 Protection turning off by itself

Hello:

I am running Norton 360 on my PC. On several occasions in the past week I have sat down at my computer to notice an error message from Norton 360 warning me that my computer is not protected by Norton and I have to click fix to turn the protection back on. I have run a full scan of my system for viruses and haven't found anything. I am concerned that my computer has been hacked or something. I wonder if anyone has any ideas on what has been happening and how I may fix this problem short of formatting my hard-drive and starting from scratch. I sent an email to Symantec's technical support a few days ago, but haven't heard back from them. Thank you for any help or suggestions you can offer me.

Sincerely,

Randy Hicks

Thank you very much. I will try that now.

Thanks,

Randy

I have just completed removal of 360 then installation of build v2.5. I will post back in a week if no further problems.

Thanks,

Randy

Unfortunately this has not solved my problem. When I sat down at my computer just now I discovered that the protection had turned off again. Do you have any further suggestions? Thank you.

Randy

Do you have any other security software on your PC?

And if you click on the Fix button turns it on the protection?

If yes what time after is it turned off again?

I have no other security software on my pc - only Norton 360. I did the new install you suggested on November 11. There were no further problems until November 14 (last night) shortly before I posted. As soon as I sat down at my pc I noticed there was a red light on the Norton 360 icon in my taskbar and a warning message that my pc was not protected. I clicked fix and it turned the light back to green and turned the protection back on right away.

Hello Folks: I'm brand new to the forum. This is my first post and it's due to the same problem as this subject. That's why I joined up! I'm wondering if we (the other "victims" that have reported this problem) have picked up an undetectable virus or worse, some kind of BOT? My troubled son visited me last week and perhaps "explored" a site(s) I expressly prohibited.

Anyway........Glad I am able to tap into this knowledge base because I have no wisdom in this area and very little knowledge as I am something of a novice.

MANY THANKS

Hello:

To RandyHicks: So it turns off while your pc is booting up? Or by the shut down? It would be great if you could check some logs (I think they are in the c:\documents and settings\all users\norton or symantec folder /I have different product (NIS), so can't check the exact folder name for you :P/ ). If you don't know what to do with them, send those to us (upload to ie. 4shared or rapishare, and post the link here), and we can search your logs.

But I think it would be a bug, and one of the main applications (like ccSvcHst.exe) just simply craches, and this would cause the problem, 'because it can't fix itself...

To SHELTERMAN: Try to run SUPERAntiSpyware. If you have any spyware what 360 has not detected, it will.

Hello:

I leave my pc on most of the time. My problem hasn't been occurring during startup and/or shutdown. Every time I have noticed this problem the computer has been running for a while. I just installed Super Antispyware and did a thorough search of my system. All it found were some tracking cookies and these were removed. I will try to find the log files then upload them.

Thanks,

Randy

I also tried the SUPERantispyware and ran a full scan. Only 12 tracking cookies were revealed.

Here's when my problem surfaces: When I first leave my desktop and sign in to a web site, a few seconds after signing onto ANY website I'll get the warning that my PC is not protected. Once I hit the "fix" button, my problem is resolved until I sign off and return to my desktop.

Now....If I sign onto any website-get the warning and hit the "fix" button again I'm OK. If I don't sign off and remain online I can navagate to any other websites using the address bar for the URL and not get the "warning".

Does that help? Am I being a pest?

And how can I send you a "kudos"?

Many thanks!

What borwser and version are you using? Because there are some incompatibility with Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 and 2 (version 7 and 6 should work fine), and as I know if you don't have the updated (v2.5) version of 360 there is an incompatibility with Firefox 3 too.

To give kudos, just click on the kudos button on the right side ;) And thanks!

I think I might have set the  browser to IE 8.beta. I have Norton 2.0. I’ll be rrenewing in a couple of weeks. I’ll see if I can somehow verify which IE version I’m on. If I’m on a beta version I’ll try to go back to IE7. Thanks again

On the menu click on Help -> About, and it will show you which version you have.

Edit: You can uninstall it simply from the install and remove programs (Control Panel).

I also experience this problem on my desktop and laptop.  It occurs maybe once a week to 2 weeks.

I leave my computer on, and when I come back hours later, the intrusion protection is off.

Many thanks again. I have verified that I’m on IE8.  I have go to the control panel but I can’t find anything remotely identified as IE under anything. It’s not there. I’m baffled.

On the control panel find Add or Remove Programs (I think it's called so in english windows :P). It will load a list all of your program was installed before. Go and find Windows Internet Explorer (Microsoft changed the name to this), and click on uninstall.

If you don't see it, check the show updates box above the list.
